View Full Version : lance is going for seven
homebrew 02-20-2005, 04:59 AM just heard it on the TV. Its official, he will ride the 2005 TDF. I hope they don't do that "Road to the Tour" stuff. I like to watch him race but please don't make me watch him get massage and talk with his GF Crow..........please no more!
I dunno about the rest of you, but I've seen/heard quite enough of Lance Armstrong. Great cyclist? Sure. But I hope if he does ride this year's TdF, he gets beaten - just to cool his ego a few notches and then maybe we'll finally be able to discuss something other than The Lance Show every July.
**YAWN**
torquecal 02-20-2005, 08:19 PM heck - I don't care about the hype or the chatter....
but I would like to see someone win the Tour de France seven times in a row!!!! Cool to be alive when something like that happens

Yeah I suppose so. But aren't you just about ready to hurl every time you see a LA picture, TV commercial, or any Trek bicycle? I'm sure glad the USPS doesn't sponsor anymore - it was getting sickening to even go buy stamps!
torquecal 02-20-2005, 08:33 PM Naw - that doesn't bother me nearly as much as seeing John Elways face all over Denver when I was forced to spend almost 10 months there in the late '80s. Being a die hard Cleveland Browns fan that hurt me badly ;-)
Elway?! HA HA! Now that's a lousy situation. I pity ya man!

Elway was the man. He sure had Schottenheimer's number, too.
I'd like to see Lance win again. And then perhaps fall off the face of the earth. Where's BG for an unbiased opinion when you need her?

Who cares what his face looked like, Elway was one of the great quarterbacks. Now get back to your dogpound. :)
"We hate Elway! We hate Elway!..."
spu2261 02-21-2005, 09:50 AM We still gotta deal with Elway here in the Denver area. I didn't make very many friends when I first moved here from San Francisco because of that. I'd say,"Elway? Isn't he the QB for the Broncos, the team that the 49ers beat the snot out of in the Super Bowl?"...

Yet, I hate you already. :)
steel515 02-23-2005, 08:38 AM He's not fun to watch because of the lack of competition. Like shaq in the nba. To me, if he can beat acknowledged dopers its obvious he's doping himself. Look at track and field and baseball. Do you see a pattern?

the '89 49ers kicked EVERYONE"S ass that year. That team was a machine. No one had a chance against them. But please Elway was one of the greatest of all time.
A blurb and some starts courtesy of Wikipedia
On May 2, 1999, at the age of 38, Elway announced his retirement from pro football. Elway is regarded as one of the top quarterbacks to ever play the game. Not only does he have more wins than any other quaterback in NFL history, but he has the best winning percentage in league history (148-82-1), and is tied for most Pro Bowl selections for a quarterback (nine). He is second to Dan Marino in career passing yards (+50,000), attempts, and completions. He is the first quarterback to have started in five Super Bowls.
He was selected to the Pro Bowl nine times during his 16 seasons with the Broncos.
Over his professional career, he led his teams to a record 47 fourth quarter comebacks.
He led the NFL all-time list with 148 wins as a starting quarterback. He was also sacked 516 times, more than any other quarterback.
At retirement, Elway's 300 career touchdown passes placed him third behind Dan Marino and Fran Tarkenton.
He was only the second quarterback to pass for at least 3,000 yards in 12 seasons.
On January 31, 2004, he was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
First Lance now Elway. What does a guy have to do to get some respect around here anyway?

Sure, they are both great athletes, I don't think anyone can dispute that. I guess for me it's just 'pet peeves', that's all.

Well personally, as a "Lance Fan" it's not going to break my heart to see him finally lose one. It's not like he's gonna starve to death. All I want is the Tour to be a good race. Give me another 2003. If it ends up like last year then yawwwwn.
Yep, that's what I'm thinking - another yawner now that LA's going to try for 7.
The only hope is that maybe he won't be as dominant this time physically, or his new team won't or can't support him as well as Postal did. That might cause the other GC'ers to have a better shot.

Generally agree, but - watching the German fans spit on him while running the gaunlet of fans and then having LA a day (or few?) later chase down Jan and Kloden for a sprint finish out of nowhere was a pretty electrifying finish for any race.

Actually, I've got tonnes of respect for Armstrong!!!!
Elway's just another matter altogether. His NFL palmares is exceptional, but I was (and remain) a die hard Cleveland Browns fan and I really can't imagine Elway as being worthy to eat the deffication of the previous owner who shall remain nameless.
Ooops, is that too harsh?
"With my dog I don't get no respect. He keeps barking at the front door. He don't want to go out. He wants me to leave."

when the dogs were hosting Denver. And it was really cold out. And the Denver kicker, Rich Karlis, kicked that game winning field goal in overtime, in Cleveland, with his bare foot? That was the game where Kosar threw a long td pass to Webster Slaughter, and Elway and co. got the ball back on the 2 with just about five minutes left. And remember how Elway just get scrambling around, eluding the would-be tacklers until shoot, he figured he'd just throw the tying touchdown pass. I believe he converted a fourth and nine or something on that drive, too. Must've been a bummer to be a Browns fan that day. Not to worry, though, they had another chance the very next year.
at the '88 AFC Champ. game, remember that one? When Byner fumbled the winning score on the 4 yd line? You remember that, sure you do!! Anyway, I was at that game (the second year in a row that Denver beat Cleveland, don't forget!) and there was a banner hanging down by the south stands that said, "I'd Rather Lose to Cleveland than Live There." and then while I was busy watching again two years later, again the AFC Champ game, again in Denver, and, well, that one was a bit too easy for the old Broncos, 'cause all I remember was how nice it was in Denver that day (65 in January!)
torquecal 02-23-2005, 08:13 PM dude - thanks for digging that it in for me.....
at least I managed to include a cycling-related word in my post : - )

In 1997, Elway restructured his $4.65 million contract down to $300k so the Broncos could sign more talent on the team. You don't think he wanted to win? Name any other pro athlete out there that would play for free, basically, just so his team would have a chance to win. Elway is awesome (and I'm not a Broncos fan!)

I think Jerome Bettis took a good-sized pay cut to stay in Pittsburgh too.
