Any suggestions on how to provent the transmitter from shorting out due to a high chlorine content or salt in the water?

I know it can be done cause I see swimmers with them on.

There is no problem with it in either salt water or chlorinated water - however, as Polar says in the manual - to maintain water resistance do not press the buttons while the watch is immersed in water.
