Bill Would Hold Game Makers Accountable For Players' Actions

SEATTLE - Should the people who make and sell "violent video" games be held accountable if someone commits a crime because of playing them?
That's something our state lawmakers are considering, to open game makers up to more liability.
House Bill 2178 proposes to hold the makers and sellers of violent video games liable if someone under 17 years old commits a crime, due in any part, to playing the game.
Supporters of the bill, like Bill Hanson with the Washington Police and Sheriff's Association, say "kids" are getting the games, and they're becoming desensitized.
"If you sit up and watch this and play these games over and over again... it seems that this is alright to walk up and hit a police officer over the head with a bat," Hanson said.
Opponents argue that the proposed bill would shift the responsibility from the person who actually committed the crime.
Lew McMurran, with the Washington Software Association, says violent games are clearly rated for adults only, and that the responsibility should be on parents to use the video game rating system and control what their kids are playing.
"We're removing the responsibility from the person who committed the act, to somebody else who's completely removed from the situation" McMurran said. "There's a very strong video game industry in this state that we want to support. We don't want to bring undo attention to an area where there's actually jobs being created, where there's actually some good economic development in our state"
House Bill 2178 is still in the committee stage in the state House of Representatives.
mohair_chair 03-02-2005, 03:19 PM What's the problem? We know that listening to Ozzy Osbourne leads to suicide. We know that watching "Macbeth" leads to killing the King. I think it's pretty clear that a lot of crime derives from video games, and we need to put responsibility where it belongs.

That would explain my overwhelming desire to throw barrels at plumbers.

Yeah....with the GUN MAKERS!
Spunout 03-02-2005, 04:42 PM Wild. Isn't the NeoCon chant against liberal society 'we don't want no nanny society'?
Where is the function of responsible parenting and family in the above case?
atpjunkie 03-02-2005, 04:58 PM well their desire for non intervention is outweighed by their need to deflect the issue away from guns because the NRA has a tight grip on their tiny nutz.
but hey I actually have a good one for 'accountability
Hold Mental Health Professionals for the crimes committed by the ex-cons they say are okay. If a Psychologist says the child molester is 'safe for society' , if the molester committs another crime, let the 2 of them be cell mates.
what do ya think? this is my Law and Order Liberal coming through.

The lines get blurred from time to time, dont they? Maybe we need programs.
atpjunkie 03-02-2005, 06:01 PM just 'selective' liberals. true conservatism is dead.

I'm really not happy with the turns the Republican party has been making the last few years. That's kind of pushing me more towards a moderate Libertarianism, less government all around.
As for this, that's ridiculous to blame the makers of the game. Blame the damn parents for allowing a child who is weakminded and impressionable enough to be turned into a criminal by a got-dam video game or blame the kid. I have played violent GTA style video games, I own violent movies and watch them all the time and I've never had the urge to kill hookers or blow up buildings or what-have-you. The games won't push you to do something that wasn't already in your head.

No doubt-I don't know if you'd call me a Libertarian (maybe a Libertine?) :D but neither party speaks for me.
My biggest gripe with our society as a whole is the continuing death of personal responsibility-it's always someone else's fault. Why do you suppose this is? I don't want to turn this into a thread on tort reform, because I believe this goes much deeper than blaming lawyers! Does anybody have any ideas on this?

Turtleherder 03-03-2005, 05:45 AM If you can hold the maker of the product responsible then the gun makers are in for a whole lotta trouble. Besides where are the future gun nuts going to come from except the video game market. :D (see, smiley face, I kid, I kid, get it?)

Sarcastic? No way. Last time I watched a football game, I felt compelled to go outside in my neighborhood and start hitting people out of a three-point stance. My elderly neighbor did not appreciate it, but hey, I was within five yards of the line of scrimmage, so I can rough him up if I want to. Those are the rules.
The really beautiful thing is that NASCAR has started up again. I love watching the race on TV, then going out on the road and trading paint with other drivers. Few seem to appreciate bump drafting on the highway.
I remember seeing the third Lord of the Rings movie, where they had these giant catapaults that threw huge boulders. I built one in my backyard and launched all the rocks I could find. You should have heard the racket around the neighborhood when those things crashed into someone's house. It was beautiful. When I ran out of rocks, I went into my garage and finally got rid of some stuff I don't need. Cinder blocks, scrap metal, old lawn furniture. A chaise lounge can fly a long way if you launch it right. Neighbor calls me up and says "your chaise lounge is my pool." I say, hey, it's your chaise lounge now!
Hey, it's not my fault if this stuff hurts people, animals or property. I am not responsible. I saw it all on TV or the movies. If we aren't supposed to do stuff like this, don't make movies about it. Don't show it on TV. How am I supposed to discern what is okay and what is not?
Bocephus Jones II 03-03-2005, 08:05 AM Hey the neocons should be paying the game makers. They are training our kids to be able to head over to Iraq or wherever else the new war is by that time and whup ass.

I guess "traditional family values" trumps "small govt." and "liberty" in this instance. Funny how that all works. Party loyalty requires some serious pretzel logic.
