View Full Version : Alternative to dumb yellow ribbon magnets
Dumb blue ribbon magnets that say, "Bring Home Our Troops". I think if you have a need to feel part of a vague yet ubiquitous group, this would be a better idea.

Is this ribbon thing going to go the way of the LiveStrong bracelets? Where we have a different colored ribbon for everything under the sun?? Ah, hell, someone is making money off of this I'm sure.

1. probably
2. yep
3. Yeah, it's the "Amurcun Way". I'm not crazy about the idea either, but with the dumbing down of your average Joe-Six Pack, you gotta communicate in the language that's best understood. Often times that's with symbolism, logos, icons, short punchy phrases.
Remember, in the "instant gratification" society, if it takes longer than 5 seconds to comprehend, people will change the channel/click the mouse.

If Yoda wrote it, it would read: "Home, our troops bring."
Bocephus Jones II 03-04-2005, 07:11 AM If Yoda wrote it, it would read: "Home, our troops bring."
If Elmer Fudd wrote it it would be Bwing Owa Twoops Home.

You must be awfully depressed at the thought of not getting your Saigon. You know, where our leaving only serves to clear the way for our opponent to succeed.
Then, the NV. Now, the "Iraqi Baathist-fascists and jihadists" to quote Thomas Friedman.
This is all the more deplorable in light of what is going on in the Middle East.
Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria and Saudi Arabia. Aren't you paying attention?
Maybe everything won't pan out. But maybe it will. This certainly isn't the time to pull out.
This is a time for cautious optimism.

That is funny...But these ribbons aren't for the troops: they are for the families left behind. Small and insignificant to most, but cherished reminders to some.
I'll get off my soapbox now, and print up Stohler's pic! :p
RkFast 03-05-2005, 05:20 AM 1. "Bring Home Our Troops"? Might as well say "I support giving up."
2. Many of those $2 magnet made in China dont have ONE DIME going to "The Troops". But many do. Charitable intitutions have used them for fundraising for that purpose. So be careful.
3. Regardless of the source, saying "I support the troops" in any fashion is HARDLY "jingoistic". But then again, for some around here, doing as little as saying "I like America" makes you a stupid, slack-jawed gun toting jingoistic "dubya" supporter.
4. If it was my choice, Id make a bumper sticker that said something to the effect of "MONEY. NOT MAGNETS"
Flame away...............

Au contraire-Ooh-rah on that note!

Ah, hell, someone is making money off of this I'm sure.I wear mine in memeory of my father and several others that I have known that have passed this past year due to CA. Last week wonderful workplace handed out torquis bracelets with "performance" on them. I wonder who the pda carrying feel-good little twerp was that came up with that brilliant idea??.

I think that is in reference to "power of pride" bumper stickers and the variety of flag-waving that people do in lieu of any meaningful dialog.

jin·go·ism ( P ) Pronunciation Key (jngg-zm)
n.
Extreme nationalism characterized especially by a belligerent foreign policy; chauvinistic patriotism.
---------------------------------------------------
Well, one can aruge the "extreme foreign policy". But lets leave that OUT for now. Again, I dont see general bumper stickers, love of country or "flag waving" as jingoism. That seems to be just old fashioned patriotism and thats good on any level.
EXTREME and CHAUVINISTIC...those are your keywords.

What's this - taking a page from my style-book by using quotes from dictionary.com, eh YGB? Well, you know what they say: "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." Thank you!

However, this further confirms my long-held contention that the average Right-Wing Sheep has no capacity for independent thought OR integrity.

I submit as evidence your typical response when someone criticizes the flag waving rhetoric. In essence, if you don't do it yourself or applaud those who do, you aren't a patriot.
In a talk given in 1997, Chomsky ridiculed the concept of "anti-Americanism" as a symptom of totalitarian thinking:
<blockquote>It's the kind of term you only find in totalitarian societies, as far as I know. So like in the Soviet Union, anti-Sovietism was considered the gravest of all crimes. ...
But try, say, publishing a book on anti-Italianism and see what happens on the streets on Rome or Milan, people won't even bother laughing, it's a ludicrous idea. The idea of Italianism or, you know, Norwayism or something like that would just be objects of ridicule in societies that have some kind of residue of a democratic culture inside people's heads, I don't mean in the formal systems. But in totalitarian societies it is used and as far as I know the United States is the only free society that has such a concept. Your "Style-book". That has GOT to be one of the funniest things Ive ever seen on the Internet as a whole. Please publish that "book" here, so we can all be sure never to copy it. Just make sure to have it typed up and dont post it in its original "crayon" format.

I did not say such a thing at all. In fact, I even posted MY OWN critiscism to the issue...the magnets. Personally, I hate them. All I said was that I dont see "Support the Troops" as a form of jingoism.

All good.
My main question here is where does "patriotism" end and "jingoism" begin?
If I was such a "Right-Wing Sheep", why would I be copying a "Left-Wing Dumbass"??
