My group is interested in riding near the Grand Canyon. Ideally a 3 - 4 day ride of about 190 - 220 miles. We are 50 year old men ranging from good to moderate condition. Is altitude a major consideration in riding near the Grand Canyon? Can you recommend any low traffic routes?

Thanks

What time of year are you thinking about? Anytime after April I would stick with the North side of the Grand Canyon. Much less traffic and the roads are not nearly as well traveled. Lots cooler too. From the north rim head north to Fredonia. You can go either east or west from there. Get a good road map. The elevation at the north rim is around 7,000 ft. You will loose elevation traveling away, especially east. There are some paved roads along the actual rim, but not many.

I had a chance to take a better look at a road map. There really aren't any paved roads that would allow you ride around 200 miles and stay near the Canyon the whole time. Plus towns/services are far apart once you leave the park proper. You're on the Navajo reservation if you head east. Stunning country but lonely.
From The North Rim area to Jacob Lake is 44 miles, another 32 west to Fredonia. You could head north to Kanab in southern Utah. Kanab to Zion is about 100 miles.
Riding from Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim you could do a loop by heading south on 180 to Flagstaff then take 89 north to Cameron and 64 through Desert View back to Grand canyon Village. The South Rim is about 1000 ft lower elevation that the North. Flagstaff is at 6910. It would be a nice ride. Be prepared to carry plenty of food and water on your bikes.
