C-40 03-10-2005, 01:23 PM The cog spacing is quite different (4.32mm vs 3.95mm). If you pay the outrageous price for the shifters, then you need a new cassette and chain to go with them. I beg to differ. The Dura Ace 10 speed shifters will shift 9 speed using the alternate cable routing. You route the cable on top of the anchor bolt instead of underneath. 9 speed shift 8 too. FYI, Shimano prints this information in their instructions so this isn't some home remedy. Shimano's official compatibility chart does not seem to agree and their RD installation instructions don't seem to address the topic either. http://bike.shimano.com/publish/content/cycle/sac/us/en/technical_service/compatibility_charts/road_compatibility.html http://bike.shimano.com/catalog/cycle/products/component.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441770437&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302034799&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181202&bmUID=1110494623025 merobin 03-10-2005, 05:13 PM Thanks for the replies. I'm just trying to keep some of the 9speed cassettes I rarely use for climbing (12-25, 12-27) but am unlikely to wear out, since I live in the flatlands and mostly ride a 12-21. Can a 9-speed shifter shifts a 10sp DA RD over 9 cogs? Thx in advance. Ed Dave Hickey 03-11-2005, 10:25 AM Yes, as long as the cog set is a 9 speed spaced cog set. I have a bike set up this way. The 9 and 10 speed Dura Ace rear derailleurs move the same amount per "click" when using 9 speed shifters eip 03-11-2005, 05:15 PM Thanks for the info! Now I can go order the DA 7800 10 sp RD without having to upgrade everything else all at once. :D Yes, as long as the cog set is a 9 speed spaced cog set. I have a bike set up this way. Lat year I used DA 9 speed last year so I could use a 14x25 Ultegra 9 speed cassette for Junior racng. I used a DA 10 speed rear derailieur and it shifted quite well, it felt better than my previous bike with DA 9 speed shifters and RD. jaywalker 03-14-2005, 07:22 PM The Jtek shiftmate is another option for doing this sort of thing. shiftmate (http://jtekengineering.com/shiftmate.htm) |
