View Full Version : Awaiting my R5000
JWLuiza 03-25-2005, 12:57 PM Hey all just wanted to talk about my expectations for my NEW R5000. :p
I just ordered a 63 cm Gray. I'm really excited. I'm goinig to put on Look Keos and maybe upgrade to SSLs. Did I mention I work at a bike shop? :D
Once it's all put together I'll post some pictures.
The only problem? Won't get it till mid April and I already sold my GT ZR 2.0.
bikerbrian 03-25-2005, 08:07 PM My r5000 just arrived at my LBS. They said it wouldn't be here until late april and it arrived the next day. So you can be hopeful it may arrive early. I'll post pics as soon as I get it, mine is the blue. :D
64deville 03-26-2005, 02:07 AM Cannondale coming in with an early delivery?!?!? We eagerly awaited our Six 13's and they were forever pushing back the delivery date. You are lucky. I guess that just means Cannondales are in high demand which is excellent for them.
zamboni 03-26-2005, 07:15 AM I don't think there is a shortage on the R5000 ? Perhaps on the Six13 with compact crank set.
JWLuiza 03-26-2005, 08:26 AM No, it is the CAAD8 R5000. The Employee Purchase stock is seperate from the "sell to Bike shop stock". Same reason my REBA fork is on delay till mid april from QBP. :)
So I'm going to buy the Keo pedals and am thinking of upgrading to SSLs... I hope it comes with a 130 stem. Also thinking of switching out to DA 180mm cranks... But I'm used to 175, so I"m not sure, maybe I'll keep the carbon cranks.

im thinking about going with the r5000 too.. i work at a bike shop as well (isn't the employee purchase program SWEEeEET! ;) ) im only worried about the longevity of the frame.. i am also thinking about the r1000 and specialized tarmac comp and pro, and trek 2300.. what do u think?
zamboni 03-27-2005, 11:17 AM If money is not a problem I would go with 04 R2000 or R3000 since they had the Mavic SSL and Ultegra & Dura-Ace components.

I wouldn't worry about the longevity of the frame. All companies are moving towards restricted warranties in the US. They don't have lifetime in EU anymore... It would've happened here if Schwinn didn't pull out of a industry wide agreement....
The Tarmac is a sweet bike. The 2300 isn't really in the same caliber as the Tarmac or R5000. The Tarmac is a great bike for Crit racing, the CAAD8 might feel better on your body though. Just test ride :)
Good luck!

thanks man! the only thing stopping me from gettin the tarmac comp over the trek or c'dale is the cheesy mixed 105/ultegra group and the alex wheels, i know the frame is top notch but frankly i don't trust alex hubs. i've actually downgraded my c'dale candidate to the r1000, since it's practically identical to the 5000, except for the ultegra group. so essentially right now it's between the r1000 and 2300.
basically, the zr9000/oclv frame vs. caad8 and bontrager race vs. ksyrium elite. throw into account the fact that c'dale offers a sweeter bike shop employee program, and i think the r1000 has got the edge at the moment.

Just picked up a near new 04 R3000 - shocked at the smoothness and strength of BB- the components are great - the new ultegra is supposed to be mirror the performance of the D'Ace. If the CAAD 8 frame is truly an improvement over the Optimo you are in for a treat.
64deville 03-29-2005, 03:18 AM I bought the R1000 and sold the Elites to get some SL's. My Elites went for $400 on this site. If you work in a shop you should have access to the Mavic Employee purchase program. The SL's are pretty cheap when you buy them direct through Mavic. Talk to your Mavic rep or call the company on the phone and get some info.

Thanks, that's what I was planning on doing. But I'm concerned I might be too heavy for the SLs... I'm 225. Should I keep the Elites as training, etc... We'll see.

I wish I was 225 and ride the SSC - no issue.
64deville 03-30-2005, 02:31 AM Got my R1000 all assembled yesterday. It now has the SL's, Ultegra pedals, and my old Trans Am seat w/ Carbon rails. It weighs in at 18.09 lbs. I'm pretty happy considering it is only slightly heavier (18.06 lbs vs. 17.60 lbs) than my friends Six13 Ultegra version which has lighter pedals and a Carbon K-Wing bar. He has about $1000 more wrapped up in his ride though.
There will be more upgrades in the future but for now I'm ready to ride.

I just got a call from Cannondale at lunch today. They had trouble running my card... HOWEVER that means that they have a 63 running around so sometime between Friday and Tuesday I should have my new bike.
I think for pedals i'm going to go with the Keo (not the Tis though).
JWLuiza 04-08-2005, 05:36 AM Yesterday as I was about to head to school to do real work, my LBS (not so local...that I work with) called me to tell me my bike was in! After a painstakingly slow build (I don't know what I'm doing...) I got the bars wrapped, the gears working, Time Impact Mag pedals on... ANd took it for a ride. Compared to my prevoius bike, this frame feels like butter on the road. On my old GT I felt every bump... This frame is so much more comfortable.
I took it to Haine's point in DC (took a wrong turn and ended up crossing onto 14th st bridge... thank god I could cut across the grass to the park area.... Of course on my first ride the winds picked up and the rain fell from the heavens, but I still had a great time. Can't wait to hit it again!
