View Full Version : Rack security, isue,or nonisue?
Visitor 303 03-31-2005, 05:53 PM I wasn't quite suer if this belongs in this forum or not, but her's my story anyway....
The Mrs. and I are in a bit of a spat. Yesterday, we hung our bikes on the rack, and headed off to ride a rails to trails in the next town. Following he ride, she wants to go shopping and/or to eat...
I'm all "what?!?! Are ya high???? We don't have a lock on that rack" Then she's "So"... Then I'm all, "What if someone takes our bikes?" Then she's like "who's gonna mess with our bikes?" Then I'm, "look, my wheels and front fork are worth what your whole bike is worth.." Then she's "But you avrage person isn't going to know that." Then I'm, but it only takes 1 person to get motivated enough to rip it off."
So,,, is she right, am I just paranoid? I'm guessing no... I've seen junkers get taken!

thiefs may not 'know'-but they'll, depending on where you live, take anything that looks 'cool'-and is easy to rip off
Also, any lock can be beat...it's only a matter of whether or not the boosters are willing to pull out a diamond saw to do their work or not.
Make a bet with the Mrs.-If she's wrong she pays for the new bike of your choice-prefer w/as much bling as possible. Just don't lock up your rides with those old Kryptonite locks you can break with a Bic

Depends on where you live. In the DC area, anything that's not really secure will be gone in no time, especially at night. In a parking lot where the visibility from shops to bikes is good, they are probably pretty safe, but I can tell you I'd never do it.
After seeing how much stuff can go missing how fast (I've lost a bike, a motorcycle and a car--all locked up and in places I can't believe anyone would be bold enough to steal something), I NEVER leave a bike unlocked, even on a car rack.
I like the suggestion to have her agree to be responsible if the bikes are taken or tampered with. That alone might be enough to make it seem like a bad idea to her.
