I'm getting ready to build up a bike with a single chainring and was wondering if anyone has a cheaper alternative to the double aluminum chainring guards. This option would cost around $100 bucks if you bought 2 chainring guards and the longer bolt set. Thanks

Look on ebay... I just got a drilled out Spot guard for $9.99 plus shipping.
Other options include finding worn out 46 or 48 tooth rings depending on what size ring you want to run and taking a grinder to them. I made a set for my teammate who runs a single 39 tooth ring. She dug it.
You could also buy one guard and a chain watcher, this has been talked about a bunch, just do a search.
Where are you shopping that a double guard set is $100? At the most, the pair of guards should cost $70 plus $12 for the bolts (which any shop can order for you - Sugino Triple bolt kit).
Good luck

I was just estimating two chainring at $40 and bolt set at about $15 = $95

I prefer a single guard with a chain watcher on the inside. The double guard clogged-up more easily.
