The Pirate Captain celebrates his victory over run off contestant Will Quick. The Captain got 58 percent of the vote.
The Senate Chambers in Witherspoon Student Center were overrun Wednesday night with the ever-expanding ranks of scurvy dogs and scalawags as Elections Commission Chair Bonnie Pierson revealed the results of the remaining offices of the 2005 Spring General Election.
Although candidate Will Quick almost doubled his votes from last week's election, Whil "The Pirate Captain" Piavis clinched victory in the runoff for the position of student body president.
Piavis faces staunch opposition from members of Student Government, who according to Quick, "weren't looking forward to working with The Pirate Captain." Quick said this has the potential to harm Piavis' work throughout his term.
"[Student Government's] overall goal is to get as much accomplished as we can," Quick said. "I hope that the perception I got from the beginning is somewhat changed [soon]."
Piavis said however, that he wasn't worried about winning their favor, pointing out that many new Senators will be entering Student Government over the course of next semester.
"We're liking the fact that most of the Senate are new scrogs," the Captain said. "Me hopes the rest bae coming around. [Our crew] not bae a bad lot."
Two things come to mind...first it is apparant that HOO's faculty senate could use at least one pirate and two there are many stuffed shirts here at NCSU...hell I have been here for going on decades and I have yet to come to know anyone in this student senate not named "the pirate."
mohair_chair 04-14-2005, 11:45 AM Shiver me timbers
Alex-in-Evanston 04-14-2005, 12:34 PM God man, you've been in college longer than Belushi. Haven't you run out of shelf space for Dave Mathews & Big Head Todd albums?
Jealous (of course),
Alex

Since living nearby, I was following this story. Pretty good stuff right there. Do you think he won on the "novelty" idea of it all?? I mean, what power does student body president really have anyway? I know when I was in school, student government was essentially just a big joke, and was looked at as being for "band dorks" only, which surprisingly enough, the student senate was composed primarily of band majors. Coincidence? I think not. That was my school (University of Maine), don't know if anyone else's is like that.

Spent a "bit" longer as an undergrad than your average with...a break...let's say. Then after graduation I went off to a river and paddled for a couple of years. Then as they say came back to reality to begin a graduate school "career path."

...go figure.
Turtleherder 04-15-2005, 06:17 AM except to make up some orginazation, apply for money and funding and then spend it on beer. I and a few friends were "founding and charter members" of the university croquet team. This resulted in an award of $100.00 which at the time was enough for four kegs. Incidentially we won the Big Ten championship by default!

It's true, it's true. We actually have some good schools. There are some fancy shmancy liberal arts colleges (high dollar stuff so they must be good right?), and U-Maine proper, Orono, ME campus, does have a highly rated engineering school. So yeah, we have them. They can't be too bad, seems as though just about the only Republicans in Congress that have good common sense and don't bend and sway to the President's wishes, all of the time, are the Senators from Maine. Snowe and Collins. They're pretty good people I've found for the most part, and I'm a serious wacko left winger.
Room 1201 04-15-2005, 06:27 AM I'll second Turtleherder-all 'Student Government's usually end up being is either....
a)fund raiser for beer/parties which have said
b)a place for a group of students to come together waste time, and be able to brag about it on their resume.
c)an organization whereby a school can make some fictional (farcical) claim that students actually have some power in the school to make 'meaningful' decisions.

It's a training ground for future pols. Half the damn politicians and politicos in Kentucky right now were at UK when I was and we all ran or ran campaigns against each other. My first student government president campaign, I recruited and propped up a candidate who looked a little weird, so I came up with THIS catchy little campaign slogan: "Not insane."
The slogan was a hit, but we lost, because it was immediately obvious that my candidate WAS.
He's in the state Senate now, BTW.
