I am looking at the possiblity of moving to Boston this fall, but am completely unfamiliar with the area. Could someone give me an idea of the types of road cycling available around Boston? Namely, I would like to know about the leavability of the city, ie is it possible to get a good ride in without driving out of the city, riding, and driving back? Also, what is the topography like around the city, is there much decent climbing to be had?
Thanks.

Boston is a great city to live in and bike in as well :) I may not be able to answer most of your inquiries above but if you can be more specific which area of Boston you'll end up moving to, I may be able to give you more detailed responses.
Anyway, the beautiful towns of Concord, Lexington, Lincoln and Carlisle are just about 15-20 miles from the city itself. And no, you dont need a car to drive out of Boston proper to enjoy a decent ride. A guy from my club lives in the Downtown area and rides to Arlington to meet us for the ride.
Hills... :) You can engineer a bike route depending on the topography you desire, from flat (bike paths on the Charles and the Minuteman bikepath) to hilly (Trapello Road [Belmont,Waltham,Lincoln]). I'm sure more experienced riders can be more specific about this.
If you can, visit http://www.quadcycles.com/events/fitnessride.htm. I ride with this club and they are AWSOME... very very nice folks :)
Anyway, ride safely!
