Do tubulars have more grip, by having better tire deflection characteristics?

First of all, this is a highly debateable topic, not resolvable by objective data - if the tire companies have it, they're not sharing, and if there's a quality independent study, I've not seen it. Also, there is more difference within a type of tire (from brand to brand and model to model) than there is between types. You cannot make a blanket statement about which type of tire corners better. Some will make this statement, just as they will state that "tubulars ride much better than clinchers," but there are just as many (if not more) who will disagree.

Kerry is absolutely right.

Maybe.

I'm comparing top of the line of each.
Maybe there's no answer.

Yes. You will die if you use clinchers and have to turn. It's a known fact.

Seems to me a moot question, because as long as the contact patch of a given tire stays basically the same in a turn as it does going straight, and to my knowledge it does, it doesn't matter.

The only advantage I see to tubies is they dont pinch flat. Plus if glued right they shouldnt roll off in a hand turn and you can ride one flat easier. Other than that theyre a pain in the ass to mount, repair etc. Funny enough I use 'em on my track bike. Thankfully as technology improoved since dinosaur days tires got better and install way easier.
