Any one have experience living and riding in either of these two cities. I may end up looking at a job in one of the two locations for a couple of years.

I have spent weeks at a time in Mexico City. If you have any kind of respitory condition including allergies, I wouldn't do it. You can see the air. The city is at altitude like Denver and sits in a huge valley, so the pollution just concentrates. Everything is covered in dust on a daily basis. The traffic is the most amazing part. A road that would be three lane in the US would have 4 or 5 lanes in Mexico City. I swear I could reach out and adjust the mirror on the car next to us on many occassions. I have never tried to ride there. Other than that, there are incredible buildings including the national cathedral and anthropology museum. One more thing, earthquakes. The city is built on an filled in lake so think of the waterfront area of San Francisco and the 1989 quake. Not bad to visit.

I have family in Mexico City and further south down in Oaxaca. Didn't ride in Mex City but had the chance to drive there. Absolutely nuts! The air is bad! There is riding but usually on the outskirts of the city with other enthusiasts and scorchers. The Mexicans even produce some fairly nice bikes and have great bike teams. I highly suggest you take any spare parts you may need or have a very good pipeline to parts outside of Mexico. Shimano is very sought after and expensive. Hate to think how much more Campy would cost you. Mexicans are very warm and generous people, you should have a great time. Mexico City is home to many many colleges, and you know what that means? College babes!!!

definitely go shanghai.. chinese women are sooo beautifull. back to south america.. yes, mexicans as most of latino people, are warm, smart and deep but latino government, latino state.. is horrible. corruption is endemic. bureaucracy is endemic. results: injustice, poverty, racism and a big inferiority complex towards other countries. i live in south america..

Shanghai has my vote. It's a happening place, very westernized, great business opportunities - one of those crossroads of the world that everyone should visit. You would be able to explore the Far East on your bicycle having Shanghai as your base. Mexico City has some good points, but I've visited both and would prefer to live in Shanghai.

Just thought I'd point out that Mexico is still very much a part of North America.

thought i remembered someone asking a similar question earlier this year....

i never rode in shanghai but lived there for a little bit during high school.... the interesting thing about china is that bikes seem to still be an accepted mode of transportation, although the big cities are pretty congested and pollution is a huge problem. i think i remember beijing having separate bike lanes, with a curb between the actual road and the smaller side road for bikes and other kinds of vehicles (push carts, animals, etc.)...but then again, i haven't been back to china since 1999....

I haven't been to Mexico City. But I been to Shanghai. The transfermation to a modern city is very amazing. My dad remember back in the early 1990s, he had to take the train to one of cities that he was visiting now there are new highways everywhere. Also many high rises! But with modernization comes conjestion and pollutions.

Are you going to work for a multinational?
