I am planning my next stable training/racing 32 spoke CX clincher wheelset. I weigh 150 and ride a Ti frame. Am based in Europe so mud is a way of life here. Improved braking in the wet is always a plus...and thus my question: is the *durability* of ceramic coated rims suitable for use in cyclocross? The rim that comes to mind is a Mavic open pro ceramic - a pure road rim .... will such road rims stand up to the abuse of CX? Has anyone had problems with the ceramic braking coating chipping off? I guess mavic also use ceramic coatings on their MTB rims - doesn't seem to be any problem there.

Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks 1^n

A few years ago I switched the rear rim on my MTB from a Mavic 517 to the CD version. Typically, I would wear out a rim (with possible resulting catastrophic failure) after about 9 months. The ceramic version replacement lasted at least 2.5 years and was still working when I replaced it again, but with a few chips that worried me. As long as you don't prematurely trash your wheels by taco'ing them (or equivalent), I'd go ceramic. I won't go back to regular rims on my MTB anymore (unless I have disc brakes) and I'm from New England where we are famous for mud!
