View Full Version : chain connector thunk
Florentine Pogen 05-15-2005, 01:11 PM I have been using a Superlink III chain connector on my ten-speed chains.
I noticed during my pedal stroke a light thunk about every other pedal rotation.
I tracked it down to every chain rotation. I looked at the where it was happing on my trainer and found that after the Superlink comes off the cassette and that part of the chain is "loaded" it makes a light thunk that can be felt in the crank.
Does anyone ever feel this on any bikes they use with a chain connector?
It is more noticable on my Ti Litespeed with alloy cranks then my Aluminum Merckx with carbon cranks.
ukiahb 05-15-2005, 01:27 PM for that reason, the protruding pins of the Superlink are not compatible with Campy 10sp IMHO....still carry it in my tool kit though, it would work fine to limp home it the chain broke
twelvepercent 05-15-2005, 03:21 PM If you like the idea of a QR link on your chain, try the Wipperman....make sure the concave side points "up" on the bottom run of the chain, i.e. inward .
I'm not familiar w/ the "superlink", but does it have a specified orientation like the Wipperman link?
Good luck!
Florentine Pogen 05-15-2005, 03:36 PM When using the connex link it is not felt?
I have never used the connex.
I do most of my business with Licktons and they sell Superlinks.
I use the Connex on my Campy ten and it's the shiz-nittle-bam-snip-snap-sack! :D
Juanmoretime 05-16-2005, 12:57 AM Works great and makes chain removal easy. The instructions can be confusing although once you put in on correctly it easy to remember.

My damn dictionary doesn't have a picture of what 'concave' is, but I think you are mistaken. The 'cave' points down when on the bottom run.
Smiling at the top, frowning when at the bottom :-p

Are you sure? I am using a SuperLink with Campy chain/10sp with no problem.
Tell you what. Tonight I will mike-out my Wippermann and SuperLink with
my vernier caliper and see if they are dimensionally equivalent.
BTW, the owner at Lickton's Bike told me that the Wippermann chain idea
was copied from the inventor, SuperLink.

That's right - frowning on the bottom run. Go to 'Products', 'Connectors', 'conneX' at the Wipperman (http://www.connexchain.com/) site and click on 'see how it's done.' Although not stated explicitly in the demo, the chain is on the bottom run, and you can see how the the conneX link forms a 'frown' when installed.
Or... convex side against the cassette.
or... concave side towards the outside.
twelvepercent 05-16-2005, 02:12 PM Yes, I install my Wipperman link as the "velimpex" site shows (web link from spunout's post). I'm sure now that my description language was misleading...I was thinking of the "concave" shape being on the outside of the plate. At any rate, the velimplex site mentioned in spunout's post is the best description
of the proper orientation for the connex link (better than the Wipperman site)
twelvepercent 05-16-2005, 02:31 PM Yes, I use the Connex link on Campy 10........
It was recommended by C-40, and his posts regarding compatibility have always been good.
(e.g. C-40 recommended against using the Wipperman Connex chain with Campy 10; he said use the straight Campy chain & link OR the Campy chain with Connex link)
Picshooter 05-16-2005, 04:43 PM I had three superlinks start to thunk, click and were noisy at around the 300 mile mark. I switched to the Connex and problem solved.
Florentine Pogen 05-16-2005, 04:53 PM I picked up a couple of connex links today from the LBS.
No more thunk.
How many miles do you get out of these?
I did not notice any thunk at all at first with my superlinks.
It got worse and worse. I guess the litespeed is worse because it is abused more.
I hope now that I have the connex the only thing that will be frowning is my link, when on the bottomside of rotation.
Tommy :D
Juanmoretime 05-17-2005, 12:48 AM I figure why take chances. Plus it didn't hurt that around the holidays I was in Chicago and stopped into Performance Bike and bought about 15 of the for $2 each.

toast 01-23-2007, 09:29 PM It may be 1.5 years old, but this is the thread I was looking for!
I have a thunk about every 2 1/2 revolutions of my crank which is driving me crazy. It obviously isn't the BB or Cranks, which are one per revolution. The tire goes around more than twice per crank, so I watched the chain, and it does a full loop once every 2 1/2 cranks in a middle gear.
I put the bike in the trainer and pushed with my arm until I found the thunk. And repeated and looked until I seemed to trace it back to my SuperLink leaving the cogs, (which are Campy 9 speed).
Only a bit more than 1000 miles on the drivetrain, and the chain measures exactly 12 inches, even across the Super link, so chain wear in the normal sense doesn't seem to be a problem. Glad to hear I am not alone in my insanity... the thunk does exist!
Dinosaur 01-24-2007, 08:42 AM It could be a defective link...I use a Connex Link with Wipperman or Campy chains. A few weeks ago my chain developed a 'thunk' when shifting under load while climbing. I pulled off my chain and gave my chain and driveline a good cleaning. While I was at it I replaced the Connex Link. It now works flawlessly. I'm thinking the Connex Link I was using must have been defective. Either that or my cassette just needed a good cleaning....sometimes a good cleaning solves a lot of problems..but in this case I think the problem was a bad Connex Link..
capt_phun 02-12-2007, 11:38 AM A follow-up on Connex link life-span. I never paid much mind to the connex link, it always worked fine. The website says "reusable for the life of the chain" and now I know why. I snapped a pin off the link on a ride yesterday, putting down a hard effort of a steep climb out of the saddle. Link had about 10,000miles on it, so I will start replacing the connex link after 7500. First time I have ever snapped a connector link. FYI this is the 2nd chain its been on.
-pops- 02-15-2007, 11:18 AM This is a timely thread...
I run Campy 10-speed with a Record Ultra-Narrow chain, and have had the 'thunk' with the Wipperman. I also have sheared a pin on the connex link as well (10S1). I recently switched to the Superlink to try it out, and am 'thunking' again.
Will check for chain wear and swap another link into the mix this weekend. I'm up in the PNW and clean the drive train 1-2 times a week, but it is usually pretty gunked up. I'm guessing that the riding conditions are contributing to my lack of success with the links.
