Hello,
I haven't ridden a bike in years, and I want a road bike.
I want something that is fast, dependable, and that has horizontal dropouts for a possible fix gear later on.

My budget is 50-100$.

The brands that keep popping up in the price range are Miyata, Raleigh, and Centurion. Every once in a while a trek or specialized. What are the difference between all of these brands?

I'm interested in doing 20 mile rides once a week eventually, and sprinting accross town.
Are there any Faq's for people buying a bike for the first time?
Look forward to hearing from all of you.

I've had decent luck looking around the local Goodwill and Salvation Army. The bikes are usually $10-$20 and need a little TLC, but I've found several diamonds-in-the-rough.

As far a brands, I'll venture that it doesn't matter half as much as the size. Try to get one that fits. If you get hooked on riding, you'll be ready to upgrade soon enough anyway, then you'll know more about what to look for.

Enjoy!

Well, your looking for a bike to do a little bit of riding on, and i"m looking to sell mine! All last year i used a mod-ed out Mongoose hybrid as a road bike, and did almost 1500 miles in the season. It's great for heavy duty roads and rough riding, but a little hard on the tour side. If you don't mind working hard, it's a great bike for the use. I'd like to sell for 175, considering how much I put into it. Let me know if your interested.
