Did anyone catch Mike Gallagher's anti-bicycling tirade this morning on KRLD in Dallas? He's has a poll up at his website regarding tax breaks given to cyclists commuting (on their bikes, of course) to work. - Take the poll, even if you don't live in the area. Vote YES.

Evidently the poll has changed to gay marriage. I guess it was getting too many hits.

but that's what you get for listening to a right wing "pundit" - DD would not approve

it's not possible to access his website unless you're a "member"

Never heard of him. But from your link, it looks like he's nationally syndicated, rather than local to DFW. I also don't see the poll you're talking about.

There are plenty of anti-cycling dudes in the media. Tends to more often be hacks in the sports pages who couldn't ride 20 miles to save their lives and think a round of golf qualifies as exercise, but occasionally you get it on the news or opinion pages as well. Without hearing the spot, tax breaks for cyclists is certainly a valid question to discuss. (What tax breaks? Where do I sign up for mine?) Call in and share your perspective - change some minds.

Maybe it will offset tax breaks for those guys driving their hummers to the grocery store.

You didn't have to be a member to vote. Evidently the poll was changed to a gay marriage issue. Evidently in this brief time, the numbers were turning around from what he was expecting so they changed the pole.

Here is the final result from the poll:

Q: Do you think people who ride a bicycle to work should get a tax break?
Answer Percent
No 56%

Yes 44%

Typical polling strategy...ask an amibiguous question so that you can get the answers that you desire.

Not that much. Hummer owners can deduct $50,000 (it was $100,000 from 2003 to 2004, but it was rolled back). Bicycles get nowhere near as much. But don't hold your breath waiting for him to do a poll on rolling back tax breaks for Hummer owners.

A radio station in Montreal used to broadcast the syndicated morning show of a really, really loud and obnoxious announcer named Howard Stern, who I am certain many of you are familiar with. He was rude and would shoot off his mouth at anyone or anything that he didn't like or agree with. Now, I am NOT stating that Canadians are more sophisticated than Americans, but this guy's ratings dropped through the floor in Canada and many radio stations, including the one in Montreal, quickly cancelled his morning program and went back to their original formats. Sooner or later, announcers who go on tirades will be quicked off the air because listeners will become tired of them, its that simple. Let them argue a point intelligently and sensibly and they'll stick around, let talk their heads off like idiots and the radio station will hopefully come around can them.

Oh my god, Americans will listen to just about any blather as long as it's something that they agree with. To wit, Stern's been on the US radio for how long? 15 years? He's been ranting for that long and he's probably as popular as ever. Get a grip, the American radio listening public are idiots. Happy in their idiocy, mind you.

Hey Eyebob,
Good point. Geez, I didn't realise that Stern has been in radio so long. I wouldn't go as far and say the American radio public are idoits, maybe they just like to listen to others talk.

Why are you proud of where you had the good fortune to be born? Surely you should feel fortunate to be an American.

You might want to rethink your strategy. For him to survive, he needs evidence to prove that people are listening to him. Whether you vote "yes" or "no" at some point in time he's going to carry those votes into his boss to lobby for a raise.

I guess he isn't the King of All Media any more.

I used to be a pretty avid listener -- when I was in high-school. I grew up. Stern didn't.
