I'd like to check around at some shops to see if they need any help on the sales floor, but was wondering what the typical pay range is. I've heard that most employees don't work for comission, so what would a reasonable wage be?

Latest bicycling mag stated the average experienced wrench gets about $12/hr. I'd imagine sales floor would be much less. Probably minimum wage in most cases. You would likely get a big discount on your bike stuff though.

The incentive to work in most bike shops is parts at cost. Or hanging out in a relaxed enviroment. Or not having to work at McDonalds. If you don't love bikes there isn't much to recommend about working bike shops.

But if you do end up in a shop you will have the incentive of eventually working your way up to assistant manager where you can work long hours on a lousy salary without any benifits until you quit and take a much better paying job at the local fast food joint opening the way for another shop rat to become assistant manager.

It ain't about the money.

Oh, how true. I loved the years I spent working in a shop. But you shouldn't make a career out of it unless a) you care not for things like nice cars, clothes, and other high-end personal effects b) you are already living off a trust fund.

I liked being the 16-21 year old kid on the $5000 bike, there is no way I could make it through adult life on the $10 an hour plus 1.5% commision I had there.
