Ok so a good frined of mine wants me to start riding with him. I know nothing about road bike but i believe i will enjoy one. I am a poor college student and dont want to spend alot of money :) ?

So I am looking at ebay at used bikes for around $200-300. Seems really cheap looking at this site lol.

I am looking at a Windsor Wellington 1.0(buyout 230)... name sounds nice but is this a good enough bike to keep up with my friends. We are reacational not race so just for fun/cardio.

How does this sound to you guys? Do you think I should try to get a better used bike or is there a big risk to used bike, like would the bike sway or something?

any help is greatly appreciatied.

for the money. Yes, it is on the low end of things but it will get your from here to there just fine.

If (or when) you get hooked on road biking you may want to get a nicer bike once your funds allow for it.

When it comes to cycling and keeping up, it is 98% cyclist, and 2% bike. So you will be able to keep up just as well on that bike as any other.

The only negative may be the downtube shifters, but I rode with those for 25 years without much trouble.

I don't know much about the brand, looks okay from the description and pictures at the price (for a new bike).

The problem with a used ebay bike is it is a bit of a gamble. There may be hidden problems that will cost you some money to repair.

What is this downtube shifter, are they a big problem? Are they just old school?

Could anyone recommend another route for a cheap bike?

for me but that's what I grew up with. The problem is you have to remove one hand to shift and if you are in a tight crowd of bikes and your handling skills are only so-so it could be a problem. The biggest problem is just that it stands out as so old school. (plus the old quill style handlebar stem stands out as old school, but it is perfectly functional)

I can't answer the comfort. That is one of the problems with an online bike, you can't test ride. The bike will probably be on the heavy side and road vibrations may transmit through the bike more than on a high end bike (it won't ride as sweet as a $5000 bike)

You could try your local bike shops, many will have low end road bikes at $500-$700 (possibly less if you find the right sale). Once you add in the $100 for shipping the ebay bike it's not that far off. Plus the local bike shop will at least do a little in making sure the bike fits you and work at getting it set up to fit you (some are better than others) and may throw in a 30 day tuneup.

Maybe your friend knows of someone looking to sell a bike that you can test ride first.

Any decent little bike shops in your area that can help you find a decently priced used road bike? How about your friends, can they help you score a bike or help you with the basics and repairs to your bike? Listen to experianced cyclists but take everything with a grain of salt. Learn to shift your gears and spin. Check out the internet for articles and the Park Tool website for repairs. If your friends aren't much help after you score a bike try another group with the same skills as yourself. Above all, don't get discouraged.

...new bikes out there (don't say "cheap") that I think you can trust. I got my sister a Tommaso Capri from Randall Scott Cycles and she loves it...

Sierra Trading Post always has something going:

http://www.sierratradingpost.com/xq/asp/dept_id.L2~4826/qx/prod_list_display.htm

Performance Bike always has something decent for sale:

...and a lot of Road Bike Review's partner sites have good deals on a periodic basis.

Don't forget, though, it's not all about the bike...you need a helmet, gloves, shoes, shorts, jersey, pump, etc...and you can find most of what you need at a good price at the above sites...
