Recent heavy rains in northern Wyoming and southeast Montana have caused about a dozen landslides to hit the Bear Tooth Highway near the switchbacks above Redlodge. Some of these have only covered the road but others have destroyed it. Experts are evaluating the situation. So far it looks like it will take about 20 million dollars to fix the damage. It is not known when the road might reopen. The road to the summit from Cooke City is likely to open soon and the road to Cody through the Sunlight Basin is OK.

Crews have been clearing the slides and have been able to clear one lane through some of them to start work on the road. The winner of the bidding to fix the road should be announced on June 20th. Montana hopes to have the repairs done by October.

I was just up there today. Tried to ride beyond the road closure to see how far I could go. I think I got about 1/2 mile up the road and ran into a sherrif. They wouldn't let me go any further. However they are hoping to have the pass open Oct 1. Can't wait. It is such a beautiful ride!
