Hard without knowing what you are doing, what make/model or what tools you have, but:
Remove the QR
Insert the Park FR5 (modern Shimano)
Re-insert the QR and leave it with just a couple of mm play.
Put the chain whip on the smallest cog
Put you cresent wrench on the FR5 so that there is a small gap between the two handles
Be sure that there are no fingers or other body parts between the two handles
Squeeze the two handles together - FR5 turns counter-clockwise.

I had to use more force than I felt should have been needed.
Turned out ok though, not a problem.

Get a bigger wrench.

Why's that?
I use your technique but without the play.

Because if the QR is tight, there is no room to loosen the cassette. I actually never use the QR anymore unless there is a problem. I just figured it was safer for somebody asking. - TF

The torque spec for cassette lock rings is about 30 ft/lbs. I think that's a ton! The reason more people don't understand your problem is because hardly anybody puts their lock rings on that tightly.

I once had a lock ring that refused to budge. To be honest, my chain whip is a little bit on the wimpy side and that's what limited the amount of torque that I could put onto the lockring. Eventually I got out my trusty Dremel and cut the lock ring to bits.

Yea the 12 inch crescent works great for removing. Using a 10 inch to install I've never had a problem removing with the bigger wrench with more leverage. When I only had a 10 inch wrench it would occasionally be more difficult.
