Durbin apologizes NOT for saying some incredibly outrageous things, but in case he offended someone when he said it: "Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line. To them I extend my heartfelt apologies.” In other words, he's not remorseful that he said the outrageous things, but remorseful that some people thought they were outrageous.

An example of this kind of apology:

"You, sir, are a scum-sucking son of a b!tch."

"I demand an apology"

"OK. I'm sorry that you're offended that I consider you a scum-sucking son of a b!tch."

Then McCain, Frist, et. al. accept the gentleman from Illinois's "apology", rather than call it for what it is. It reinforces my belief that the members of the US Senate are more concerned about the members of the US Senate than they are about their constituents.

I hope, I hope, I hope that a politician other than a Senator is the nominee for President from either party.

Not everyone believes his remarks crossed the line, so he doesn't need to apologize to them. When Senators from all parties start apologizing for all the things they say that might offend anyone, I'll share your indignation. Until then, I'll just think of Durbin as a fool. Not for what he said, but for letting the GOP force him to apologize. The Democrats will cease to exist if they keep backing down like this.

Me too. I've been having this same discussion with a couple of other PO devotees. What a load of crap, tears, broken voice and all.

Durbin did not call any Americans Nazis or Cambodians; that's where misunderstanding begins.

His apology was carefully and correctly worded in my opinion, directed to those who insist on misunderstanding.

What Durbin said was not politically correct and could be spun against his party.

Durbin is very popular here in IL and need not worry about reelection.

nothing to apologize for.

yesterday, on the house floor, a fine upstanding repub did this:

Rep. John Hostettler, R-Ind., criticized Obey and Steve Israel, D-N.Y., who offered a similar condemnation of academy officials earlier this year on another bill.

"Like a moth to a flame, Democrats can't help themselves when it comes to denigrating and demonizing Christians," Hostettler said.

when objections were raised, he agreed to have his remarks stricken from the record, but refuses to apologize for saying them. frist and cornyn haven't apologized for basically calling for judges to be attacked or killed.

that's been the problem with the democrats. whenever any one of them speaks up about what the repubs are doing, the repub attack machine jumps in full bore, castigating them and calling for retractions and apologies. in essence, not addressing the points raised, but changing the subject to how outrageous the person was for saying them. the spineless dems back down, apologize, and slink whimpering back to their corner. meanwhile the repubs have no qualms attacking dems with hateful language at any time, and any place, and no one calls them on it, and demands retractions and apologies. dick"eff you" cheney anyone? they refuse to atone for their actions, call anyone who opposes them on it wimps and pansies, laugh it off as if it was some kind of joke, and go about business as usual.

dems gotta stand up, stick to their guns, and call it the way it is. and not back down from the repub attack machine one inch. bravo for durbin. give 'em some more. and listen to them cry in outrage.

buncha thin-skinned pussies, the republicans. love to dish it out. don't like being on the receiving end too much.

Do you have a link to a speech where "hits" were put out or is this just your own conclusion to something these two gentlmen said?

Dems believe in guns? I would have thought the call would be, "Stick to your lawyers!"

if you're that ignorant about current events that you haven't heard their calls for retribution against judges, don't expect me to do your homework for you. Google is your friend. use it.

He weaseled just like Howard Dean did. The GOP is pretty much a white Christian rich-guy club, and you don't have to look very hard to find hints of Nazi in this administration or the military.

Is it the white Christian part that makes me a Nazi or do I need money too? Not many rich white guys in the military. Does the uniform make one a murderous butcher or is it something n the food? We always suspected the potatos had saltpeter, whatever that was supposed to do to us. Are military nazis multiracial or is it just a select group, the white Christian guys?

see, the repub methodology. ignore the question at hand, and steer the conversation into all sorts of tangents around inferences of what was said.

for the record. Durbin never called any american, soldier or politician, a Nazi, a Stalinist, wht have you. he simply read a couple of descriptions of Gitmo prisoners recorded by FBI agnets, and asked, when you read that, do you even conceive in your mind that this is being done by Americans, or would you more closely associate such actions occuring with some totalitarionist state, such as Nazi German, the Soviet Union, the Khmer Rouge etc.

as per method, the repub attack machine took this statement, and twisted it into durbin attacking american soldiers and calling them Nazis. just as Snake is trying to do here. good job snake.

Oh my God did you just twist all around what Cory said. He didn't say anything about being a white Christian making you a Nazi (although almost all Nazis were white Christians by the way). He said the GOP is pretty much a white Christian white guy club. And there are hints of Nazi-ism in the military and the administration. Not sure how you came up with you assertions.
