I'm planning a trip to Las Vegas this fall with a few friends who also ride so we've started talking about finding a shop to rent road bikes and head out for 75 - 100 miles. I thought about heading out to Hoover Dam but I don't know how busy Hwy 93 is or if there's a "road less traveled?"
Any advice on bike shops or rental shops, as well as other routes would be most helpful!
By the way, We'll be in Vegas October 27 - 30th...

For rental bikes check Las Vegas Cyclery. http://www.lasvegascyclery.com/
For some rides, check the calendar -- http://www.greenvalleycyclists.org/

About Hoover Dam -- Yikes, major traffic and tourists who don't pay attention. 93 is the main route to Northern Arizona. In a couple of years the bypass bridge and road will be complete and a Dam ride would be pretty cool.

If you were coming earlier (before Oct 15th) you could join the Las Vegas Century for a good trip around the entire valley -- including Red Rock and Lake Mead.

Group rides listed at http://www.vegasbikeclub.org/ride_schedule.htm

When I lived out there, I regularly rode the Red Rock Canyon road west of the city. You can do a nice loop from the city. Probably fall a bit short of your mileage goal however.

riding to Mt. Charelston just north of LV. It will give you the mileage. The challenge and the contrast in views. From plain ol scrub brush desert to forest pines and cabins. Get a bite at the ol' lodge.

Good luck

I did that ride last Summer.... Great adventure, but my advice would be bring a LOT of tubes & keep your bottles full. That freeway is a real killer. I went through 5 tubes on my ride. Maybe my luck was just particularly bad, but there sure was a lot of crap on the roadside.
