View Full Version : Parking My Bike

I live in Brooklyn and work in midtown Manhattan (the corner of 57th and 7th) which makes for a pretty perfect commute. The only problem is that I don't know where to park my bicycle. (The building where I work doesn't allow bikes in the elevator so I can't bring it up to my office.)

I want to combine my commute with longer rides, so I want to use my nice ride...a late 80s full Campy Bianchi. (Besides, I don't even have a junky-looking "commuter.")

Does anybody know of a parking garage or a building that will allow me to lock my bicycle inside for a monthly fee??? Or, should just I bite the bullet and buy a crappy looking (not riding) bike that won't get ripped off when I lock it outside.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Tourbillon

I've never been to NYC but know a few people who do.
Check if there is a cargo or maintenance elevator that you can get access to as long as it's okay to store the bike in your office once you get past the elevator issue.

If not you might look into one of the folding bikes that fit into a softbag, some people go that route to get around building/management/train/bus rules.

A guy in my gym works @ Worldwide plaza & parks his bike there. I'm not sure if they have room for more takers, but I think it was like $50-100/year - pretty reasonable.

I'll try to get the details if you want, but I'd start inquiring @ the garages near where you work. That is bound to be more convenient. I start my new job on 4/12 @ 50th & 6th so I may be in the same boat as you soon.

PS - I'd go with a fixed gear beater bike if I were you. I commmute from NJ (1x/week) on just such a rig. Your bike sounds too nice to risk.

Try forming a relationship with the doorman or maintenance guy in the building. A buddy of mine works in a highrise building and has the same issue. He started pleading his case to the building manager who now lets him stash his bike in a little used broom closet in the building...

Thanks cmgauch and Steve-O. Those are some great suggestions that I'll have to follow up on.
