Noticed a Tour rider with the computer mount apparently extending from the front of the stem. Looked like the computer was sitting directly in front of the center of the stem and bars. Anybody know what computer and mount this might have been?

I don't know but was planning on asking the same question. It seems like most of the bike either have stem mounted computers or a mount that is offset and centralizes the computer.

FSA makes a handlebar mount "Control Center". Just a mount that clamps to a 31.8
handlebar and extends a plastic arm to a circular piece of black CF.
I used tie-wraps to mount my Cateye micro-wireless computer. I don't prefer to mount a computer display onto my stem because it means I have to move my eyes that much further downward and away from my direction of travel.
Minoura makes a stem-mounted clamp also, I prefer FSA.

I'm thinking of getting one but it's pricey. I believe it's about 70bucks.

So the computer would be almost level w/ the handle bar.

I like the idea of freeing up handlebar space, but it seems pretty out front, exposed, and it could easily be hit or bumped by accident.

Check out the Sigma's. If memory serves correctly, some of them are set up to mount on your stem. I think they're secured with rubber band straps. Never had one but I think I remember seeing one that way.

I've got the BC1600. They secure with O-rings, which make them easy to take on and off when adjusting bars, etc. They can also rotate 90 degrees. They come with a selection of O-rings for different size bars. Very nice.

I think the computer you saw one of the bike in the tour was a Credit Agricole and it is the Shimano Flightdeck computer.

I figured out one of the center mount computers is the one for SRM Dura-Ace crank power-meter. http://www.usauzziesales.com/images/SRM.control-V.jpg

It has an offset mount to center it in front of the rider. And only $3400 AUS.

Just make sure its not the wireless (RDS) version. The RDS version of the BC1600 and 1200 are handlebar mount only.

It's the Mavic Computer and you can get it with cadence as well. I have it and have run it for over 2,000 miles with no problems.
