Yup, Jan if Basso doesn't race.

The top rated rider from this year will wear #1.. presumably Basso.. Julich wore #1 in 99.. that was a big curse for him..

Wouldn't it be the designated leader of Discovery? As I understand it (and if I'm wrong, let me know, because I'll have been wrong for almost 20 years) the teams get their number ranges in the order of their highest placed rider from the previous Tour. So Discovery would get 1-9, CSC 11-19, T-mobile 21-29, and so on.

For example, although Kloden was second last year, Ullrich was wearing #11. Had Kloden missed the Tour, it would have been the same, I think.

That was my impression too but history says that when the winning rider from the previous year is abesnt, the #1 goes to the second (or third) placed rider. In 99, neither Pantani or Ullrich were there (1st & 2nd in 98).. both teams were present but Julich wore #1 and promptly crashed out in the Metz TT.

Jan was #1 in 1999 because he was second in 98 and Marco was not in the 99 tour. Basso will be #1 next year if he starts. He is in an awkward situation because he is Italian and will be expected to ride the Giro.

Agg :) Ullrich didn't ride in 99 and certainly wasn't wearing #1 on the sidelines. Julich did start the tour, he was the last rider off in the Prologue & was wearing #1 :)

Should be Popo. It is the team's, not the rider's. Kloden was second last year, he isn't wearing 11.....

It's the highest returning finisher. It has nothing to do with the team.

mohair_chair and mb168 are both right, sort of. The number set goes to the team not the rider. For the top three finishers from the previous year, the team gets the 1's, 10's, and 20's. The team can then give the numbers out to riders however they choose. So this year, Discovery had the 1's, T-Mobile the 10's and CSC the 20's. Discovery and CSC gave the first number to their team leader who also was the highest finisher last year. T-Mobile chose to give 11 to the current team leader, Ullrich, rather than their highest finisher from the previous year, Kloden. After the top 3 teams, the number sets are given out in order of UCI team rank.

You are right. I forgot about the knee thing in 99. Julich was third in 98 and was the top finisher to start the 99 tour. I remember the pundits saying that the 99 win by LA was a fluke because Pantani and Ulrich were not there. Then there was 2000, 2001, .....
