FrontRanger 07-27-2005, 02:31 PM and somebody interviewed about halfway down sounds awfully familiar.

StageHand 07-27-2005, 05:54 PM The initials weren't familiar, but I think I'd been to that website a couple times.

What are you doing reading the City Paper?!
Yep, I'm famous! They used two of my photos in that article too :]
Here are a few shots from where I stayed on the roof of the HoJo.
Pretty damn comfy!

FrontRanger 07-28-2005, 09:30 AM I stumbled across it from singlespeedoutlaw and the similarities were just too close. I loved the part about sleeping on the roof. You sure know how to travel in style. I guess this means you are no longer an "amateur" as stated in the article since they published your photos. Congratulations!

You are considered an "amateur" in most photography contests until you make at least 50% of your income from photography. Of course just because you aren't making a living from it doesn't mean you don't have the skills.
Just as being a professional cyclist is less glamorous, harder, less rewarding and less enjoyable than some might think the same could be said for photography.
Still RB1 has more than earned any recognition and renumeration he gets.

Thanks for the kind words MB1. I'm really happy about it. I got a call just a second ago from a friend who was reading the City Paper and saw how I was mentioned. She called just to say kudos which really gave me a much needed happiness boost.
Your photos are always amazing. I don't always comment, but I lurk a lot. Glad you post so often as you do!

I'm definitely very amateur but thanks a lot! I had such a good time. Sleeping on a roof seemed like the best idea at the time. I had three cameras with me and my bike. I didn't want to chance a park bench where my stuff might have gotten ganked at knife/gun/syringe/ point.

Taking a few morning shots from up there. (complete with contourted look on my face):

..on the roof of something more upscale for the honeymoon. :D
I guess you did!
Well... what roof did you and Mrs.M stay at? Any recomendations?;)

We met in Lake Tahoe at the start of OATBRAN a 5 day bike ride across Nevada. Exactly a year later we got married at Lake Tahoe and made the ride our honeymoon on a bicycle built for two.
We didn't actually live together until about 6 months after we got married. :(
You are welcome to borrow the tandem (a Santana Team Ti) the next time LFR is in town (or for your honeymoon for that matter).

Very nice. Staying in hotel rooms is so 2004. I am just glad you didn't get rained on. I would hate to see all that nice camera gear come to harm.

Very valid points, MB1. I run a small photography company and still do some consulting to bring in the $$$. Some months I guess I would be considered a professional photographer and some months a professional consultant. I like to think of the consulting as just a means to an end. Just until National Geographic wises up and hires me. 8-)
feel free to take a look if you got time to kill..

First off: I always wanted to ask how you guys met. Cool, now I know; that's a great way to meet!
Secondly, yeah, if ever, we had time, we'd love to borrow your tandem. I have been looking on Ebay the last few months, but I'm tryign to save up for the big move. One day though, I'm sure I'll have one. That seems like a ton of fun.

In the Cycling Gallery. The cross picture named: Cross001 is really particularly great IMO.
Gonna browse aphoto.net when I get home tonight, and have more time to enjoy it.

Ridgetop 07-28-2005, 11:27 AM Hey Arby, cool about the article. I've never thought about sleeping out on the rooftops before. I actually like the idea.
Frontranger, this is a pretty cool shot. Nice photo site.
YuriB 07-28-2005, 02:16 PM Love it!
That's it - next go around I waana be a messenger
And great coverage on your site - that looks like one fine time.
FrontRanger 07-28-2005, 02:57 PM Thanks Ridgetop. Not sure if you can make out the second cyclist but she is on a handcycle. Very inspirational!
