View Full Version : Ultegra 9 spd crank with Ultegra 10 spd group...will it work? filly 08-03-2005, 06:25 PM 12345 NoMSG 08-03-2005, 08:18 PM 12345 Yes, and yes. psycleridr 08-04-2005, 04:01 AM Will this cause shifting problems since 10sp chains are thinner that 9sp? Are the teeth on the 9sp crank thicker than the 10sp? just curious. Bacco 08-04-2005, 04:17 AM What are the options for Ultegra 9 equipped bikes, say in a year or so, if one of the shifters break? Since you can't repair them and they will be out of manufacture, are you forced to upgrade the entire drivetrain to Ultegra 10? Or, will 105 shifters remian 9 speed, so they would be an option? FYI, my LBS owner told me just yesterday, that Ultegra 10 shifters will not work with 9-speed cassettes and cranks because of the difference in spacing. The inside measurement of the chains(between the plates) are the same. The 10 speed chains have a different outside plate/pin making them thinner overall. No problems using a 9 speed crank with 10 speed Dave Hickey 08-04-2005, 04:47 AM What are the options for Ultegra 9 equipped bikes, say in a year or so, if one of the shifters break? The LBs owner is either trying to get you to spend more money than you need and he is misinformed. Any 10 speed Shimano shifter will shift 9 speed with the alternate B cable routing on the derailleur. Basically you attach the cable to the rear derailleur on top of the bolt instead of the bottom and each "click" of the shifter will move for 9 speed spacing instead of 10. This method also works with 9 speed shifters shifting 8 speed. I run 8 speed on most of my bikes and I have no problems keeping them operating. Don't worry about your 9 speed becoming obsolete. Many Shimano parts are interchangeable with 8, 9, and 10 speed. For further info on the alternate B routing check, http://www.sheldonbrown.com/dura-ace.html filly 08-04-2005, 04:53 AM Thanks, fellas. Also, to Bacco, to go to 10-speed, all you have to change is the shifters, cassette and chain. TF Bacco 08-04-2005, 01:48 PM That's interesting reading! According to the Shimano website the Ultegra ST-6600 shifters are "compatible with 10-speed systems only." Their service instructions state in order "to obtain the best performance" use with Ultegra 10-speed components. That's a little more vague. It appears that Shimano isn't very forthcoming about backward compatibility with 9-speed components, if they are in fact compatible per Sheldon Brown. The LBS owner is full of @#$%. Supposedly the NEW Ultegra and DA deraileurs are backwards compatible. The old rear deraileurs are supposedly only 9 spd compatible (have never tried using it with 10 spd shifters/casette). The old front deraileur will work fine with a 10 spd system. So will the old cranksets (those two I have verified and ridden myself). Al1943 08-07-2005, 02:18 PM The shifters are the biggest expense item in an upgrade. I don't see why anyone would buy 10-speed shifters to run with a 9-speed cassette, just buy the cassette and chain with the shifters when they wear out. |
