and I'm looking for places to ride! I live around the 16th and Baseline area, just north of South Mountain. I don't know the area wel at all, and would like some advice on where to go for good, relatively safe road riding. Thanks for the help in advance!
Also, what's the best shop relatively close to this area.

Welcome to hell. You are at one of the best locations. South Mountain park itself entering in at Central avenue just south of Baseline. Its a great ride to the top and a fast run back down. The foothills area on the south side of South Mountain. Ride from Ray rd. along the neighborhoods weaving in and out flanking the mountain to Pecos rd then West until it ends. Nice area.
Bike shop? You have a SuperGo at Ray & Kyrene, which is the largest in the area. Good deals on most items. Check m out at supergo.com

The MAG map works great for making your own loops in Phx. As for shops, Supergo is relatively close but I'd avoid them as far as service goes...Landis is good.

Hey, welcome to Phoenix. Can't help you much w/ riding in your area as I live in Glendale. But I had a pretty good experience at Domenic's in Tempe (though I didn't buy my bike from them). Landis has a good reputation in this town and they have several locations.

I moved from the Peoria/Glendale area nearly 11 years ago. Do you know if Peoria still has road bike races for their Pioneer days and Fiesta days?

I really don't know. I can't remember seeing any info on them on any of the local bike club websites. I just learned this year that state time trial championships are run on Sun Valley Parkway west of the White Tanks, where I like to ride if I feel like driving for a half hour in order to ride without traffic (!). So I can't claim to be an expert on road racing here in the Valley.

and I'm looking for places to ride! .
there are several groups that ride on the weekends.
check out the group that rides out of kiwanis park every saturday morning at 6:30am. kiwanis is west of kyrene on baseline. if on baseline, go to mill, head south, as it curves east turn right on all america way and you'll see the parking lot on your right. it's a large group (70+ riders) that splits into several, depending on pace. check in with sue fasset.
