I have a new (to me) bike en route, and I would like to replace the 53-tooth large chaining ring with either a 46 or 48-tooth outer ring...any ideas where I can pick one up? I believe Shimano only sells replacement rings in the 53-39 variety. Thanks in advance.

FSA & TA both make pretty good rings in those sizes. You can get them at www.cyclocrossworld.com online. Or just go to your local bike shop and have them order them for you. You will save on shipping.

Not sure if you will be able to do that. STandard BCD is 130 for cranks. Compact are 104 BCD which have smaller out rings in the sizes you are looking for. I don't know if you will be able to go smaller than 52 or maybe find a 50 tooth big ring to fit a 130 BCD.

If you followed the link above, you'd see that they sell chainrings smaller than 50. 45, 46, and 48T outer chainrings are available.
Also, compact road cranksets have a 110mm BCD, not 104. 104mm is the diameter of 4-bolt mountain bike cranksets.

You'll need a 130mm BCD outer position chainring
TA makes those down to a 48.
