My speedplay pedals don't spin freely. I noticed if you manually spin my wifes they will rotate several revolutions before stopping (they aren't speedplays). Is this normal for speedplays? The pedals aren't making any noises or have any hitches when spinning. Any comments?

Since they're packed with grease I don't think they're supposed to spin freely. I believe Speedplay says that if they are spinning that easily they need to be lubed. My X2s are the same way.

Thanks for the reply.

That seems to be the reason but there just seems to be so much resistance compared to other pedals.

Yep, I think that's normal. Mine don't spin either (X2's).

Same here, it's normal. Speedplay recommends re-greasing every 2000 miles.

It may also be because Speedplays weigh much less than other pedals and consequently have much less rotational inertia. Kind of like how a wheel spins easy for many rotations, but if you have just a hub, it won't spin freely at all.

Hello,

Spinning a Speedplay is not a sympton that they are working correctly. Quite Contrare. I first had my new Speedplay Zeroes and after I rode them a while I noticed a "click" coming from the pedal. In my naive way, I used "White Lightening" lubricant and the noise went away and the pedal did spin freely as you described of your wife's pedals. However, after reading this forum and contacting Speedplay it would seem that I had sinned! Speedplay wants GREASE in there - not dry lube or any other light oil based lubricant.

I then proceeded to use Speedplay lube gun and their recommended "Sta-Lube" blue marine grease, which can be found at any auto supply house. Pump, Pump... squirt.. ooze and the pedals were greased fully. You will know as the blue marine grease will seep out the back of the pedal along the spindle. That being said.... the pedal will no longer turn freely as before, or as your wife's pedal does, but it is well greased.

No more noises and just happy riding from that point forward. Those inner pedal areas hold a lot of grease and I noticed just a minimal amount of seepage after that lube and they now have about 600 miles on them.

Hope that little bit helps.....
