Here's my first post...
I've been mountain biking since 97 and I'm ready to give road bikes a go. A good friend of mine gave me a 1987 Schwinn Tempo road frame. I gathered some parts from a nice, but too small for me Bianchi that I picked up at a garage sale. All of the parts are transferring over as planned, except the bottom bracket. The bb has a wobble to the spindle. Does anyone know what size bb the Schwinn Tempo requires? 68 or 73mm shell, and what spindal length. I've read that this frame originally came with a double crank and a 6 speed cassette. The parts bike that I bought has the correct specs for the build. It looks like at the most, I will need to buy new tires, tubes and bottom bracket. I looked on the perfomance web site and they have a Shimano UN square taper bb for about $25.00. Would this be a good replacement?

Thanks for any help!

The BB is english threaded 68 shell. The spindle length is going to be a function of crankset and not frame. What crank set are you using?

The crankset is from the Bianchi parts bike I bought. I'm not sure of the arm length, but it's a double chainring crank, and is labled "Bianchi".I'm using the wheel set from the Bianchi as well (6 speed cassette). Would you happen to know what bb tool I would need for the older shimano bb's? Most of my bike tools have proven to be useless on these older road parts. The bb that is currently in the Schwinn is labled Shimano. It looks like there are several Shimano UN series bb's that may work as a replacement.

I hope to have it all together by next week, and will post a picture. Looks like it will make a very nice starter bike for me. I've been using my MTB bike with slicks for road miles. I do an average of 100 miles a week, so it will be nice to actually have a road bike!

Thanks for your help.

check out the bb pages at park tools:

rather than buying a new tool, i just took my old bridgestone in to the shop to have them pull the BB for me. that worked fine.

so...whats up with the bianchi frame....
