have you ever seen a race with TWO SEPERATE PITS??? i am not revering to 2 access pionts to the same pit. this was mentioned recently to me, and i had never heard of it. seems this would require TWO pit bikes.

i think this was proposed, as it a double pit with access on the right side was not available. should the pit ALWAYS be on the right side of the course??

which is better?
a) having a single pit on the right
b) having 2 seperate pits, both accessed on the right
c) having a double pit on the LEFT side of the course (2 access points, 1 pit)

thanks!!

Yeah, the race my team is putting on is apparently going to have 2 seperate pits. (I just saw the flyer and went, "Huh???") I've never seen it done before, so I have absolutely no idea how they're going to handle it. I'm only going to have one pit bike.

i gave the same confused "huh?"

how many people are going to show up at the race with 3 bikes??

None, but I imagine they might stash some wheels in one pit and the spare bike in the other.

I'm only going to have 2 bikes with the 2 sets of wheels that will be on them... so I won't be using pit #2.

You're hurting my brain. Why is right vs. left an issue? You can easily design a course with a single pit that can be accessed twice per lap -- either on the right or the left (both times).

For example, in choice C above, if you reverse direction, it becomes a double pit with RIGHT side access.

Last years Crank Bro's GP at Alpenrose (Stumptown) had both pits on the left.

What totally sucked is that one of the entrances you were coming into at about 20mph on wet pavement. On top of this, they wouldnt allow the pit people to stand to the racers right when changing bikes (at least during the Masters race). It was a total mess. Hopefully they will change it this year.

2 pits aren't uncommon. the problem (from a promoter's perspective) is that you are supposed to have an official in each pit.

I can think of at least two races last year that had 2 pits. One had this bizarre pit set up where the 2nd pit was directly across from the 1st, but separated by the course.

You have to plan strategically if you only have one bike or one wheelset. Figure out where you are most likely to flat and put the bike or wheels in the nearest pit. If you have 2 bikes and spare wheels, put the bike in the most likely mechanical area and wheels in the other.

The UCI changed its rules on cross pits last year, so if you access the the pit on the left your helpers need to stand on the left. Likewise, right access, helpers on right. This is a safety issue so that you don't have pit crew people crossing in front of racers in the pit.

seems this would require TWO pit bikes.

Or have a really heads up pit person to move your bike or wheels to the location you need. You would have to signal need by raising your arm or something and the pit person would need a good vantage point but it is doable.

There were 2 pits at 'Cross Nationals when they were in Baltimore a few years back. Most of the riders used runners to ferry their wheels/bikes between the pits twice every lap. Late in the race things got pretty hairy when the field got strung out and the runners kept crossing over the course interweaving with the riders.

I saw at least one rider broadside a runner and go over the bars.

Left side pits are another reason to practice your right side dismounts and remounts! I had a few really terrible bike changes last year at alpenrose in the left hand pits. Having 2 pits far apart isn't bad, but it's less than ideal. Left side pits should be avoided by the promoter if at all possible.

they'll have 2 pits but a running shortcut from A to B so crew can beat the rider over there.
if you have 2 pits and no connection between the 2 it seems silly. US Nats last year was great 1 pit, right entrance both directions with the wash/bike stash area in the middle.
