just wondering if you ss crossers use a chain tensioner, and/or if its even necessary at all if you have horizontal track ends.

View Full Version : SS-ers w/ horizontal track ends: chain tensioner? xccx 09-03-2005, 09:06 AM just wondering if you ss crossers use a chain tensioner, and/or if its even necessary at all if you have horizontal track ends. kajukembo 09-03-2005, 11:44 AM having a tensioner and track ends are like wearing suspenders and a belt. blackhat 09-03-2005, 12:03 PM having a tensioner and track ends are like wearing suspenders and a belt. I think the OP meant tensioner as in surly tuggnut tensioner, not surly singlator tensioner. that's what I thought anyways, but perhaps he'll clear that up. I use neither when I run mine ss. kajukembo 09-03-2005, 12:13 PM I need a nap. too many miles xccx 09-04-2005, 05:31 AM I think the OP meant tensioner as in surly tuggnut tensioner, not surly singlator tensioner. that's what I thought anyways, but perhaps he'll clear that up. I use neither when I run mine ss. yeah, thats what i meant. i could swear i´ve seen them on bikes w/track ends, but not sure why they are necessary, hence the question TurboTurtle 09-04-2005, 05:46 AM yeah, thats what i meant. i could swear i´ve seen them on bikes w/track ends, but not sure why they are necessary, hence the question Much easier to adjust. If you don't need them, don't use them. - TF xccx 09-04-2005, 05:53 AM Much easier to adjust. (sorry if its a stupid question) TurboTurtle 09-04-2005, 06:25 AM but i guess my quesiton is...how do you know whether or not you need them? (sorry if its a stupid question) You don't need them. Once the hub is tightened down using some good axle nuts and washers, they don't do anything. They just make it very easy to get the rear wheel straight with the proper tension before tightening the axle nuts. - TF Alex-in-Evanston 09-06-2005, 07:30 AM Good Gawd, that bike is pretty. I hope you and it are feeling better. Seeing as this is the cylcocross forum - do you plan to join in the Chi-Cross-Cup races? You've got a charming internet personality, it would be nice to meet the genuine article. Alex TurboTurtle 09-06-2005, 07:58 AM Good Gawd, that bike is pretty. I hope you and it are feeling better. Alex Thanks for the well wishes. I'm still sore, but riding. I cannot pull up on the bars. Doing the 100 miles at the Harmon next Sunday with the training group I have lead all summer. We are all pushing, in or beyond our 5th decade, so it is turning out to be a contest of cripples. It's been great fun though. The attitude of those who stick with it is just tremendous. Two problems with CX: Minor - From what I understand they will all be downtown. The guy that did the work last year for Northbrook area says he's not doing it this year. Major - You've never seen me get off and on a bike. I would get lapped in the time it would take me to do one obstacle. TF |
