I just picked up a set of the Nashbar moustache bars. I had planned to put them on my old beater bike, but I think I really, really like them and want to use them on my Litespeed Mutant Hiwassee cross bike.

My problem is trying to figure out break lever options. Anyone got any pics of their moustache set ups??

I can send you some when I get home on Friday, in the meantime, I think there are some pics on the fixed gear forum or even Fixedgeargallery.com

Good one, got an early morning chuckle out of me.

After dreaming about it all day, I got around to making the switch as soon as I got the kids to bed.

Looks great, got to try it out tomorrow so look for a ride report coming soon!!

I would go with non-STI Shifter with bar-con.

I put on a set of 7 speed Thumb shifter and non-STI shifter. Here is a picture of it.

Never saw that before. Looks GOOD! Do you have any more of those Deore thumb shifters lying around?

I used the thumb shifters because I didn't want to spend my cash on a set of bar con.

What brand of 'stache bars are those? I have a Cannondale mountain bike with slicks that would look GOOD set up like that.... .and it has the Deore 7-speed thumb shifters already!

I just picked up a set of the Nashbar moustache bars.

BTW: Do those Nashbar m-bars weigh as much as they look like they weigh? Is there any indication of what kind of steel they are made from? They sure have them on an impressive sale!! $14.95!! I might have to buy a set just for grins...

Out of stock at Rivendell. Maybe Harris Cyclery has some:

Nashbar is blowing moustache bars out at $9.95! In 52cm and 56cm.

OK, now you guys went and did it. You made me buy a set of the Nashbar M-bars. Now, I'm going to need to buy a new project bike to put them on, plus bar-end shifters, etc.

I hope you're happy!!! When my wife starts screaming at me, I'm going to give her all of your contact information.

Yours,

Forbes

All this talk about 'staches has got me yearning for more hand positions on my mtb/commuter. But I'm wondering... Will the 26mm nitto bar fit my mtb stem (normally 25.4 clamp diameter)? Can I mate 9 speed bar end shifters to my Deore LX front-d and XT rear-d (circa 1998)? And maybe I know the answer to this last question - I should be able to use road brake levers with my v-brakes, assuming I get one of those cam-style adapters.(?)

Thanks for any advice. Every year my mtb looks less like a dirt machine and more like an asphalt eater...

You might want to consider the Nashbar "Trekking" bar. It is basically a modified moustache with less forward extention, squared off curves, and an extra, more upright hand position. It is set up for 25.4mm clamps. It is a bargain at $14.95! I'm about to mount a set on Frankenbike. I'll let you know how they work out.

It's hard to understand how they mount from the catalog pics. You'll have to take my word on the description.

Like moustache bars, these can use road or ATB brake levers, but most people I know use road levers. Dia-Compe 287V road levers would give you enough throw for your V brakes. I'd like more info on those cams you referenced.

I don't have a clue about your shift lever question.

I read somewhere that Shimano Mountain and Road front shifters pull a different amount of cable, which shouldn't be a problem since you can put that shifter in friction mode on Bar Ends.

Other than that as long as the Deore is 9-speed you should be good. If it is eight speed, Harris cyclery has some 8-speed Bar Ends left which will work Okay with 7-speed, which are available here.

If it is 7-speed and you don't want something that will just work Okay, then there's always Silver Shifters, Rivendells house brand. They aren't Indexed, but they aren't quite Friction either. They are available here. The action is a ratchet inside the shifter, which even when tightened will still run silky smooth. Since you are not working against the friction caused by tightening it down, this makes pulling the derailer onto a larger cog easier, but will prevent the shifter slipping backwards against the spring tension.

About the Nashbar bars, they are not the same angles, bends or material as the nitto's, so don't expect them feel the same.

By the way, the pictures do not do justice these shifters. Nor do pictures do mustache bars justice, my dads XO-1 looks simply beautiful with Nitto's.

Ben's Bike out of Milwaukee sells a generic bar identical to the Nitto. The Nashbar has an odd angle to them- more V-shaped in the bends.

Maybe that's why I always need to tweak my barrell adjusters on my SORA Shifter/XTR front derailleur combo to trim high and low positions. I'm thinking I should swap out the XTR derailleur for a Shimano road derailleur.

they are indeed different. read under "front indexing".

Then I think I'll put my XTR derailleur onto Frankenbike, which is going to use thumbies. Also, since the crank on Frankenbike has a big ring of only 50T, the XTR der will match it better. I'll put my new SORA triple front derailleur on my Lippy, which is running a 52T big ring and SORA brakey-shifters. If it works well, I'll keep it. Otherwise, I'll buy a Ultegra or a 105 triple front.

Thanks for the info!
