View Full Version : How much will my Motobecane Grand Record fetch?
Nathan_P 09-17-2005, 07:57 PM I am thinking about selling my Motobecane Grand Record on Ebay. It is a 1977, and right now looks beautiful, I tore the bike down to the bare frame and worked over every peice of equipment on the bike. I like riding it, but I just want something newer. I will keep it and ride it if it won't fetch very much because it is a very nice bike and I spent alot of time to fix it up.
Thanks,
Nathan
Dave_Stohler 09-18-2005, 09:43 AM Probably $50.
ckilner 09-19-2005, 01:26 PM If it is the Reynolds 531 bike with DT shifters, Nervex lugs, and black/red paint, then it was near the top of the Moto lineup and would be worth much more than $50 to a collector or enthusiast - I'd guess $300-$500 based on this old guide: http://sheldonbrown.com/vrbn-g-n.html#motobecane
On ebay it could go lower (to those interested in a frame to build a fixie) or higher (to a collector).
French bikes have slightly less value due to their wierd threading/components.

Hmmm... I could be wrong, but I don't think the 1977 model was the nice R531 unit. What components are on it. Unless it has Campy components, the first response was correct. You won't get much for the bike. You'll be better off riding it and enjoying the fruits of all your hard labor yourself.
moschika 09-19-2005, 03:48 PM are thinking of just selling the frame and fork or complete bike? frame and fork, i'ld guess $75-100. maybe more. complete bike, i'ld add another $100. i've seen a couple of these go, in fair shape over the past year in those price ranges.
Nathan_P 10-03-2005, 08:09 PM The bike has Reynolds 531 Tubing, Campy Neuvo Record Shifters and dereilluers. It has Shimano Dura Ace Brakes and TA Specialties Cranks. It has an original Cinelli Mod Campione del Mondo Bars, and I think it has the Nervex Lugs, and it is the beautiful Red and Black paint. It still has it's 531 Stickers. It has a few scratches, that I am going to very carefully touch up before I sell it. It has Rigida rims and Normandy high flange hubs.
Nathan_P 10-03-2005, 08:22 PM here are some pics of the frame.
moschika 10-04-2005, 11:46 AM a few days ago a grand jubile frame and fork sold for $86 on ebay. it was similar to the GR except for french components. and from the pics, yours looks to be in similar or better condition.
Nathan_P 10-07-2005, 04:29 PM So one 300-500 dollar, a few 100ish, and some asking about the frame/components.
Ckilner: Based on the FRame components and everything, do you still think that is about what I could get from a collector?
ckilner 10-07-2005, 07:08 PM My guess was based purely on the old Sheldon Brown guide saying "The Grand Record model with 531 tubing and N.R. deraillieurs, might be worth close to $400 to the right buyer."
The low-value guesses seemed to be based on it being an inferior model (non-campy, non-531, etc.) so I think it clearly has value over $100. If you write a good ebay listing, you might generate some interest. You also might try the vintage bike classifieds, like on www.campyonly.com. The N.R. and other vintage parts alone might be worth a few hundred.
If you are local to the mid-Atlantic, I might be interested in it as a complete vintage bike - it looks close to my size (56cm).
ckilner 10-07-2005, 07:40 PM update:
my guess is $250-300 based on this from
http://www.recycledcycles.net/recy.rtro.html for a similar model Raleigh:
21in RALEIGH COMPETITION GS -- 12 speeds, black -- $300
Classic mid-1970s model. Repainted Reynolds 531 double-butted frame with decals, fancy Prugnat lugs. Fully sloping fork crown, half-chrome fork blades, Campagnolo dropouts, front and rear eyelets. Includes some original parts: Campagnolo Nuovo Record derailleurs, T.A. three-pin crank, Weinmann center-pull brakes. Malliard high-flange hubs laced to 27in alloy rims. Suntour ratcheting down tube shifters, alloy bars, stem and seatpost. Very good condition. (Priced without pedals.)
Nathan_P 10-08-2005, 06:49 PM Sorry Ckilner, I'm in California. If your still interested, shoot me an email at blackhawk3dr @ yahoo.com (Remove spaces). Otherwise, I think I'm going to list it on Ebay with a minimum bid in the 250-300 range and see what happens. It it doesn't sell I'll try on some of the classics forums.
Nathan_P 11-06-2005, 03:00 PM Well, it's selling on ebay as we speak, I'll update with the final bid but as of right now it is at $337. I'm very happy at this price, but I'll be even happier if it goes up more.
Nathan_P 11-06-2005, 03:31 PM Final Price: $352!!!!! That puts me well on my way to a new bike!

Looks like my original $300-500 and later $250-300 guesses were halfway decent. Congrats on the good sale price - you really cleaned it up nice for the auction.
Nathan_P 11-07-2005, 05:13 AM Thanks. I am very happy with the price. Now to pack it... I won't be getting a new bike for a while, I'm going to ride my Trek. I am going to buy some clipless shoes and pedals though.
