View Full Version : Riding in Dallas?
BikeRider 09-18-2005, 04:02 AM I'm going on a business trip to Dallas in November. I'll be staying at a hotel near Gaston & N. Washington Ave. I'm going to be going back & forth between there and Viceroy Dr. & IH-35 on the east side of 35. I was looking at a map and found a route between the two:
1. Start at Gaston & N. Washington Ave
2. Head down Gaston to Pacific Ave
3. Turn to the right on N. Pearl St heading NW
4. Continue on Pearl St until it comes out onto 289
5. Go north about 3 blocks and take a left turn on to Maple Ave.
6. Stay on Maple Ave until I get to Empire Central
7. Head across Empire Central until I get to IH-35
8. Go up the frontage road on 35 to Viceroy Dr.
On the way back I would take a slightly different route since I couldn't go back down the frontage road on IH-35. But I see there are some other roads that would get me back to Empire Central.
So has anybody rode in this area of Dallas. Do you think it would be rideable?
twowheelstex 09-18-2005, 05:22 AM This would be a risky ride. Dallas drivers are not kind to cyclist.

culdeus 09-19-2005, 10:16 AM Save your energy and take the classic ride up swiss to WRL around and back after work. That's a risky high traffic part of Dallas.

Thanks for the info. It was just a thought. From a previous visit to Dallas(this particular area) it didn't look like a good place to ride.
Shoefly 09-21-2005, 07:33 AM Yea, not the best part of town. WhiteRockLake is your best bet. I can rec' some great dive barrs in the area though!

Culdeus has the right idea. Gaston turns into Garland Road which is at the south end of WRL. It would be kind of dicey riding on Gaston, so if you can find a parallel road like Swiss, then you are golden.
If you know the time you'll be there, I can meet you at WRL if you want someone to ride with. I live 2.5 miles from WRL and ride there almost every night.

Your hotel is near 24. I live roughly between 6 and 7. That route is great to get to the lake around and back or go a couple of times there is another path that runs all the way to 635+75 that adds 10 miles on round trip as well near "12".
I'm out at WRL all the time also.

That's a nice path. There is a stealth entry point in my neighborhood. I'm on the north side, near Skillman and Abrams. It's a nice diversion to take the path to the end and back on the single speed. Doing laps at WRL gets a tad boring when you do it every day.
Culdeus, keep an eye out for a tall guy on a 63cm silver and red Trek 2300 with a silver helmet. That will be me. If you want to hook up for a ride sometime, I'm always game.
Shoefly 09-22-2005, 06:32 AM Does anyone know where I could pick up the trail coming from Richardson? I'm over near 75 & Arapaho.

If you can get to Spring Valley and Coit, on the southeast corner there is a street called Peyton. It's kind of tucked behind a little Chinese food place. Take Peyton all the way south to the Valley View Park which is just north of 75 and Hillcrest. You can jump on the trail there and take it to WRL.
And for other Dallas on-street routes, try this link. It is not working this morning, it's slow but it has worked for me before.

Shoefly 09-22-2005, 09:45 AM Awesome, thanks. Any idea how long the trail is from that point and back?

I hear that. I started doing the RBM rides on Saturday to get a little variety for the longer rides. Tough for me to get time to migrate away on week days when WRL is so convienent for me.

RBM on Saturday. You must be pretty fast to hang w/that group. I've been riding at WRL on Wed. am's while it's been hot. It does get boring going round and round, but I feel safer there than out in the country on my own.

I try to go down to Joe Pool on Saturdays and ride with that bunch down there. Certainly worth checking out if you haven't done it. The Sat RBM ride is good too. I've done that one a bunch as well.
If I have to end up at WRL on the weekend, I'll generally divert over to Flag Pole Hill between laps and ride up and down that a few times. That's good for a little leg burning and is as close to any 'hills' that you'll get in Dallas proper.

I think it will take you less than 30 minutes from that point on SV to the lake. It's not that far, but it's a well used trail, so it's hard to hammer with all the people out there. And with it being next to that creek most of the way, it gets mucked up pretty quickly when it rains.
Shoefly 09-27-2005, 10:27 AM So I did WRL for the first time this past Sunday, and really enjoyed myself. Got really lost on the last part of the trail though. I entered via Peyton/Valley View Park and never found it on my return trip. Ended up riding near flag pole hill, up White Rock Trail rode (rode by a peacock!) and ended up finally finding my way home. 35 miles total, can't wait to do it again.

Did you miss the trail entrance at the Valley View end or the White Rock end? It gets a little tricky if you don't know what to look for at WRL. You kind of have to go under a bridge on the north end going under Mockingbird and then pick the trail back up to cross over NW Hwy.
I ride that same FPH circuit all the time. It's nice and rolling. Riding by those peacocks is a little surprising if you aren't expecting it, and who would! There's actually 5 or 6 big one's down there. I'm surprised you only saw one.
Shoefly 09-27-2005, 10:58 AM I got to Northwest but lost the trail at that point and ended up on White Rock Trail road. Found some hills I wasn't expecting though!

You have to cross NW Hwy at Lawther, by all the liquor stores and the DART station. Stay on Lawther and the trail crosses before you get to FPH and all the peacocks. My very crappy map updates try to show the spots.
Shoefly 09-28-2005, 06:27 AM Thanks, I'll have to look closer next time.
Also, know of any other routes in Richardson? I usually ride the UTD bike path after work, but I'm getting bored with it. I'm a little hesitant to do much exlporing, as when I'm out during the week, it's usually rush hour.
