View Full Version : How far have you gone in your life?
campagnolOCLV 09-20-2005, 04:52 AM Sounds like a loaded question; but the answer i am looking for includes either miles or kilometers. I guess some of you out there could figure out feet or inches. But my question is how far in your best approximation have you traveled while on your bike...
I'm approximately 30,000 miles.
That probably isn't much considering most pros go about 20,000 a year.
I sometimes wonder about that same question but lots of years and lately for sure I haven't kept much track of my cumulative miles.
Figure that I started riding in 1959 and have been riding hard since 1969;
On the low side 36 years @ 12,000 miles a year = 432,000 miles plus a bit for the first 10 years.
On the high side @ 15,000 miles a year = 540,000 miles plus a bit for the first 10 years.
MB1 still loving riding.
Do you own a carbon yet? Have newer bikes helped prolonged your ability?
I went home and pumped the tires on my old steel bike at my parents that I road when I
was 16. Ummm..it weight as much as my hardtail (2003) and I don't see how I
rode the thing 30 miles one day.

tarwheel2 09-20-2005, 06:30 AM I've only been keeping serious track of my cycling miles for the past 5 years, and I've ridden about 32,000 miles during that time. I started cycling again about 5 years ago after quitting for a number of years. In college, bicycling was my primary mode of transportation and I rode a lot for a number of years after that, but didn't keep complete records then. It was before the days of cycle computers, and the old Huret mechanical mileage counters left a lot to be desired.
Kerry Irons 09-20-2005, 07:40 AM I started riding in the mid-60s. I'm on my 5th bike (not counting various commuters) and figure 245K miles on road bikes plus 60K miles commuting to work.
terry b 09-20-2005, 08:11 AM Started a spreadsheet in Juky 1998 with the purchase of my first road bike (as an adult.) Today the total mileage stands at 39,000. In that time I've increased from ~1500 to ~8000 miles per year.
No idea how many miles prior to officially keeping track. Perhaps 3x to 5x that number. Rode all through my school years, never owned a car.
bigrider 09-20-2005, 08:51 AM About 33,000 since 1997. I have settled into about 4200 miles per year. That may jump if I decide to commute regularly. That decision is coming soon with my youngest child getting his drivers license this spring and no longer needing me as transportation provider.
Henry Chinaski 09-20-2005, 08:53 AM Not sure, probably around 100k, maybe a bit more.

Cold/rainy/foggy Marin country mtb rides during the middle of the week, just about any ride in Italy, or the miles I did on my BMX bike, crusing down to the dirt jump we set up in the back of that vacant lot...

Hmmmmmmmm, I was racing in the early 60's -- 1962, at 14 yrs old. Used to ride a half-century after school several times a week, a 25 mile race Wednesday night, a race on Sunday, and centuries here and there all through the summer. -- Besides not owning a car until I was about 20.
Never bothered to keep a log of the miles. Before cycle computers -- I remember we used to estimate mileage using the highway signs, estimate speed/duration=miles. I'd run a string over a route on a road map and then pull the length past the scale on the map.
I think we probably estimated on the high end of miles, speed.
Quanity / Quality . . .
Miles are significant, particularly if you're racing.

mohair_chair 09-20-2005, 09:41 AM My best guess would be: tens of thousands of miles.
I'd say at least 30K, and probably upwards of 40K. That includes road biking and mountain biking.
