I recently bought a pair of these American Classic 32h Campy hubs (http://cgi.ebay.com/American-Classic-Hubs-32-2005-NEW-Campy-Black_W0QQitemZ7187123464QQcategoryZ36144QQssPageN ameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) on ebay for the purpose of building some Campagnolo 10spd race wheels with tubular rims. They were a good price, but THEN I did the search and saw a couple posts about the AC hubs not having good enough seals for cross. Should I save these for a road racing wheelset? Are the Campagnolo hubs any better in the wet and grime?
It's not stated in the auction, but these hubs come with a little recall-ish ziploc baggie containing a new "cam plate" and instructions for replacing it if the "loop spring" inside the freehub is a full circle instead of a half circle, in other words the hub has to be disassembled and then reassembled before you can use it. That's not stated in the auction. I haven't taken mine apart yet.

Morgan,
I have stated here and in other forums that the AC hubs do not have the best seals in the world; however, if you keep them away from the pressure washer, they should be fine. If you live somewhere that is constantly muddy, I would rather run Campy hubs for their better seals and adjustability. If you only get mud occassionally, they will be fine but you might want to invest in a bearing puller (makes life much easier when replacing or overhauling the cartridge bearings) and good marine grease to keep the bearings from turning to dust after water, sand, and who knows what else gets in there.

I should have said that I live in Northern California and that this is my first cyclocross season. I don't think we're as wet or muddy as most regions at this time of year, but there is some water and mud I think.

cxrcr & I are starting to sound like a broken record on this forum. :) He's had trouble with the seals where as I have just started my second season on a pair of these hubs with no problems (I live in Seattle & have MANY muddy races on these, two this last weekend). I agree that you should try to avoid high pressure washing them directly but if you keep up the maitainence on them, you'll be fine. They are easy to dissasemble & you should definitely switch out the replacement pawls (or whatever it was) they sent. Looks like you got a great deal on these as well. I bought them direct from someone i know at AC & you got them for about the price I paid. Nice buy. Good luck & keep us infomed.
