I know gear slection depends on the course, but where do you start?
I know 26" MTB is around 2:1 . . . 32x16, 34x17.
For the road I run 3:1 on my fixie 48x16, and when I dial it down some 48x18. (2.67:1).

I was thinking maybe starting with (2.3:1). 44x19. The reason for the 44 is because after single speed class is done racing I want to slap on gears on the back and race the masters race or what ever is left. Yep . . . a 1x9 (44x 25, 23, 21, 19, 17, 15, 14, 13, 12).

O yea, I've got a bigger tires, and Bigger tires means Bigger roll-out, so I might have to compensate for that also. Maybe 44x20 . . . ?

i go 2:1, but I have 180 cranks and I'm 5'11. I've seen guys all over the board. I don't race SS very often and when I do, I don't pre think the gearing. 2:1 is what I got. I just get on and go.

I runa 39/18, and have been running it fixed this year as well, a little light sometimes, but I've tried a 17 once before and it killed my legs on the last lap and a half, I'm 6ft and about 170lbs, probably more of a spinner, I got the 39/18 up to about 24-26mph fixed in my first race this season, serious spin, but not for really long.

I've been running a 42:22 so far this season, in muddy courses it works very well but I'll be putting a 20t freewheel on the other side of the flip-flop for courses that have extended dirt road sections.

Anyway, check me out from this past Sunday.

42x16 As you can see I got small wheels/tires(1.3 or 35mm). I spin a little sooner than if I were on 700c. Handles awsome and I don't have to lift it as high. Also, I have not had to get off the bike on any of the rideable climbs here in Wisconsin. 5'11" 190.

Depends on tires and course. I would run 44x18 with 35mm wide tires on almost any cross course. It accelerates relative quickly and gives a decent top end with my engine running on its typical 5 out of 6 cylinders. Bigger tires on more technical 19-20t. Smaller meats on smoother course may require a 17t but usually a 44 up front.
