View Full Version : Frogglegs on Bianchi Fork

I managed to get some Frogglegs Canti's off of a friend who had upgraded to some Paul's. I took them down to the LBS cause I can't setup canti's for beans myself. I got a phone call later that day telling me that they couldn't fit them onto the carbon fork because there wouldn't be enough clearance to remove the tire.

Has anyone had any experience with fitting frogglegs on their carbon fork? The Bianchi carbon Fork that I have on my Surly cross check looks pretty much the like standard Winwood knock off a number of people have on their bikes. What gives?

Any input would be helpful, as I haven't looked at it myself yet.

what part actually contacts the tire? I can't picture this. You remove the straddle cable to take your wheel off, I assume you know that but wanted to mention it.

The fork may be like the wound ups, where the spacing between the back end of the pad, the rim and the fork is pretty tight. I've heard of people ahving to chop off rear end of the brake pad to get enough clearance. Is your pad one of those thick-ass ritchey's or is it more like an v-brake style pad i.e. avid?

Do they mean remove the wheel without deflating the tire? That may be OK if you don't plan on changing the wheels with a spare in the pit and remember to inflate the tire after inserting the wheel. My mountain bikes have that feature.

I agree with the guy who suggested hacking the end of the brake pad off, no harm in that. If you get those Koolstop brand Salmon pads they seem to work a little better than the ones that come with the brakes and are quite a lot thinner.

Thanks for the great advice including the "removing the straddle cable" (yes I did know that). According to the LBS theres isn't enough clearance behind the brake bosses in order for the brake pad to fall back out of the way in order to get the wheel out.

I think that the cutting of the pads seems to be a good solution, although a little drastic. I'm going to ask at another LBS who field a local Cyclocross team, I find it odd that I can't squeeze in a commonly used brake, on the fork.

Thanks

check my old postings. much narrower than cool stops etc... work far better (no shudder or squeal) and don't have the 'pad to fork' clearance issues. otherwise, yes cut the pads, done all the time

OK I went to the other LBS that fields a big cross team on the local scene. Their mechanic managed to get the Frogglegs to fit without any problem. He used a set of standard Shimano pads instead of the Frogglegs pads that came with the brakes. They fit fine and work great.

Thank you for all of the advice.
