Welcome back to the story of my mechanical clumisiness. If you remember back about 2 weeks ago in part one of the "it works better than it should" series i was using Time ATAC cleats with my Candy ti pedals and not getting very great results, but it still worked marginally well.
Episode 2:
Last week i bought a used Dura Ace 12/27 9 spd cassette off of ebay and put it on my tubular race wheels to replace the 12/26 9 spd Sram cassette that was on there. I wanted that extra tooth and the 50 grams less weight was cool too, plus i figured it'd shift better than Sram. Well, i put the cassette on and it was bad, really tough to set up, i spent literally 3 hours dialing in the rear derailleur. It would jump gears or not make it all the way to the largest gear, sometimes it took 2 shifts to go down a notch etc. I threw back on my Sram 9 spd cassette and everything was back to normal----the shifting was a little "sticky" but nothing bad. I figured the DA cassette was old and had been worn too much and thats what the prob was. and i was pissed i just wasted 3 hours to go nowhere.
flash forward to today---- i was packing up all of my 8 spd stuff up to sell as a lot on ebay (I had "upgraded" my drivetrain 2 weeks ago from 8spd to 9 spd in the rear), and i was going to throw in a chain i had sitting around into the group. Then I thought, no that chain is 9spd and the gruppo that im selling is 8spd. Then is hit me....I never put on a 9 spd chain after i put on 9 spd components. Went and bought a new Sram 9spd chain, put back on the DA 12/27 cassette and click click click everything works perfect!
Whats weird to me is that the 9 spd SRAM cassette worked pretty good (better than it should) with an 8 spd chain unlike the DA. Maybe its because DA has tighter specs or something?
Stay tuned...im sure something else will happen.
