I've been a fan of Epic for normal days and something like Pedro's Synlube or Slick Willy Slush Guard (or whatever its called) for days like today.

1 part synthetic motor oil, 4 parts mineral spirits. put it on a few days before racing and let dry completely.

Thirty weight is good, I like Wolfs Head brand. I ran some automatic transmission fluid for a while, that was pretty good also. Chain saw bar oil is pretty decent if you happen to have it around.

Yeah. Don't be scared, just squirt some on there and go ride. Strip it off with engine brite and pitch the chain at the end of the season. Chain lube is for posers, fight the power.

Amsoil bar and chain is UNREAL when it's sloppy...amazing.

if you want the commercial version, buy ProLink by ProGold. The ProLink is cloer to 5:1 spirits to oil. The key is to apply the day before you ride and allow the spirits to evaporate. I apply about every 100 or so miles on the road. You'll find that your chains will last longer as well. To clean your chain, re apply the concoction and wipe it down. I have a master link on my chains and when it's time for a deep clean, I throw it in a vat of mineral spirits for an hour or so. I use an old plastic detergent bottle with a large mouth screw top. after a minor wipe down, the chain looks new.

or do you just mix it up and then use it immediately?

1 2nd Slick Willy Lube. Use the Dry in "normal" conditions, and the wet when it gets nasty. Great stuff. It really stays on in the muck.

I mix it in a large contact lens solution bottle. one bottle mixed up will last a loooooooooong time. ask all your friends, family and co workers who wear contact lenses to give you one when they are empty. another trick concerning the bottle is to snag one of the long clear tubes from a Tri-Flow bottle. if you have another cyclist buddy who uses that stuff, get one from him. you might have to bore out the hole on the lens solution bottle to get it in.

go to the hardware store and get one of the big square cans of mineral spirits and just about any synthetic motor oil. clean your chain completely by soaking it in the spirits for an hour or so. take it out and wipe it down. put it on the bike and really coat it with your mixture. put some news paper under the bike to catch the drippings. after several hours, the spirits will evaporate.

for about the price of 1 small bottle of lube, you can make a few years worth.

Great Stuff! The guy who invented the stuff races cross in New England all the time and often sells it at races. You can buy the stuff in many NE shops and online.

Nothing beats the Slush Armor flavor for anything Mother Nature dishes out. Best thing about it, no squeaky chain or washout even in the worst race mud and wet. Race, hose off your chain with water, wipe dry, put away. Chain is squeaky clean. Relube only when you have to.

Give the stuff a try.

i've heard good things about this stuff. sorry if this is a dumb question, but if i want to use it, do i need to de-grease my whole drivetrain first? thanks...

Yes, the website suggests you start with a clean, dry chain. I've used it for 3 years, no complaints.

My bottles say for best results start with a clean dry chain, so if you want the stuff to really perform well, at least for the first application I would totally degrease the chain using whatever means you want. Once I applied the first time, I don't really re-clean my chain as reapplying Slick Willy does that and the chain stays pretty clean anyways.
