I was just about to post something about all these things and maybe a poll. Of all the "regulars" here, who would be willing to pay a fee so that the ads and such could be turned off? Im on a smoking fast connection and sometimes it takes minutes for pages to come up. I would think that a small membership fee... would pay ultimately more, and more quickly than the hits ever would to these links.

Would you be willing to pay a fee of 5-10-20 a year so that we could eliminate the pop ups and flashing banners off of this page? Maybe they could take that and get us a smoking fast server or something. Who knows... is it even an option... seems like it could and should be.... Id pay.

That's malware of some sort. Go to www.lavasoft.com and get the free home version of ad-aware. Do a scan on your computer, if it's the first one, you'll be in all kinds of pain seeing the results.

Second, if RBR forums load slowly, then go get google's web accelerator. The idea is kind of creepy, as it basically keeps a web cache on their computers and knows what sites you're going to. But it greatly speeds up RBR for me.

I'm on a Mac, and my router has a firewall, so I was under the (naive?) assumption that I was fairly well insulated from this kinda crap. If it's malware, it looks pretty legit and seems dedicated to RBR. I'm not getting the pop-ups anywhere else.

I don't think that's exactly malware. I've gotten that same pop once or twice out there in the world, typically as an exit pop, but my machine is clean (XP PC). It is possible, though, that somebody like DoubleClick or one of the other targeted-ad companies out there has managed to get a hook into your browser. Ad Aware should sort you out, though you may just be able to delete your cookies and clear it up.

I've been using Firefox for so long (and before that Opera) that pops are really rare for me--I've kind of forgotten what it's like. Perhaps you could try the Mac port of Firefox--I think there is one. It's free.

Oh, and firewalls won't save you from much of anything you might pick up on the wwweb--they usually are set up to allow any HTTP (general web) traffic. Otherwise you'd have trouble surfing. Firewalls are just to keep intruders from getting into your network uninvited through various backdoors, and can also be used to thwart some viruses (the ones that need to connect to a remote server for instructions). But if you haven't done any config on your firewall, it's probably doing very little for you. You should probably have some anti-virus (updated regularly) and anti-spyware software installed too, if you don't already.

Again, I was under the assumption that Safari was as good at blocking pop-ups as Firefox and the Unix design of OSX didn't give malware anything to get its hooks into. But I'm no expert. I'll delete the cookies. I'm not havign speed problems, and I never see any other pop-ups. Only at RBR. Strange.

Why don't ya'll just get Firefox and turn all the ads off?

Don't make me go vonteity on your ass. (WTF does that mean, anyway?)

I run Firefox w/ the Filterset.G add on extension-never see any pop-ups, and never see any adverts here either ;)

Ive been using a mac for a year and have a pop up once a week average. Also, dont have to worry about viruses because nobody makes them for macs. Not trying to convert you all. Im just saying...

you shouldn't be having any problems with safari and pop-up's.

Any time that happens, feel free to PM the ad that's on screen (on the main forum page, not the pop up) and I'll pass it along to the sysadmin guys. I'm betting it's an over-zealous advertiser sneaking a script into one of his ad's.
