View Full Version : Which rear derailleur with 10spd chain/9spd cassette?

There've been a lot 9spd/10spd compatability threads, but after reading as many as I could, I don't believe my question has been specificall answered.

I plan on getting a new frame and using as many of my Ultegra 9 spd double components as possible, except I want to switch to a new 10 spd triple (I need it for the hills and I understand the new FD shifts really nice). So, I'll buy new 6603 crank/chain rings, FD, and chain (I understand a 10 spd chain will work best with the 10 spd chain rings and will work fine on my 9 spd cassette).

I need to buy a long cage rear derailleur. I understand that both the 9 and 10 spd rear derailleurs have the same geometry and will work with my 9 spd cassette/ 9 spd shifter combo.

So my question is, which rear derailleur will work best with a 10 spd chain? A 9 spd 6500GS or a 10 spd 6600GS? I would prefer to get the newer 10 spd.

Either RD will be the same. - TF

Without a doubt, I'd go with a compact crank rather than a triple.
Triples in front shift poorly. A compact will give you almost the same gearing, and much better shifting, AND no need to buy a new rr der, or front.

"Triples in front shift poorly."

Nonsense.

If you can get by with a close ratio cassette (i.e. 12/23 9-speed) and a compact, then consider it. Otherwise go with a triple and keep the ratios as close as you can.

Nonsense to you, not to me. I had ult9 triple on one bike and DA9 on the other. Shifting between the front rings was never even close to the DA.
Are you saying the triple shifts just as well? We should start another thread and talk that one through then, and leave this one to the original topic.
