View Full Version : ZG brakes: any downsides? Looking for feedback from users/owners et al.

Considering ZG or 7800s. Currently on Campy Record and like the feel of the records, but am running 7800 shifters, so loss of QR is getting to me. Plus, my records are old school dual pivot on rear, so I'd like to lose some porkage as well.
Anywho, how are your ZGs treating you; the 05s? I'm looking at the Ti. I'm running alu rims.
I'm expecting the loss of 150g from the calipers will make me 2-3mph faster all around...

I'm assuming you are kidding about ZG making you faster - they are brakes after all. All that aside - I love mine. They have ample stopping power, and look great - so minimalist compared to the chunky brakes from competitors. I'd suggest the black kool stop pads (also included) rather than the cork ones as those cork ones didn't stop worth a darn. The only downside is cost - and perhaps the fact they have a little less travel on the quick release (though this might be a bigger deal for people with wider tires).
clgtide1 10-27-2005, 06:19 PM I have had mine since January. LOVE THEM. Only use the Corima pads if your braking surface is carbon. The only downside is that there is usually a wait to get a set.

Downsides: (i) look like refugees from the mid-90s "cnc mtb component" craze; (ii) very expensive; (iii) moderately more difficult to set up properly.
Upsides: (i) way way light; (ii) will stop well when set up properly.
Juanmoretime 10-28-2005, 03:41 AM I had 2000 Record on two bikes. I bought one set to try and after a month the second set of Record calipers when away and I bought a second set of the 05-OG's. After thousands of miles on these brakes they are just as sweet as the day I bought them.
The will not give you any more speed on your bike although they will make it lighter and give you better braking with good modulation.

Einstruzende 10-28-2005, 05:18 AM The price and looks are enough enough to offset the weight savings I think. Not worth it over Record brakes.

In theory, in a tight crit, better brakes CAN make you faster. Not because they're light, though. Because they stop you quicker. The idea being that you can come in at higher speed and wait longer before scrubbing off speed for the corners--more time at high speed=faster laps.
This assumes, of course, that your previous limiting factor was braking, and not lack of power or fitness, like I would have.
rensho 10-28-2005, 08:26 AM Price is certainly a set back. DA are $170 at a good deal. ZG are $400 all the time. Looks of the ZG are a wash to me; don't love or hate them.
Thanks for the input folks. At least i know there isn't a performance issue with them. I only hear good things about the 7800. I had the 7700 before the Records, and there was fading and braking feel issues with those as they flex enough for even little ol me to not like them on long steeps.
