I'll be in Hawaii for 12 days on a family vacation & was considering shipping my road bike for my daily escape. Is this worth doing or is it more practical to rent a bike? How is the road riding on Oahu? I typically ride 4-5 days a week at home, so I'd like to get my fix if possible. Also, if renting is the way to go, can anyone recommend a bike shop that rents decent road bikes? Thanks, Mike.

You can rent road bikes from The Bike Shop in Honolulu. Bunch of great guys, and can help you in determining the direction you can ride.
their address is www.BikeShopHawaii.com
The riding is scenic, but there is hardly any bike lanes, and the potholes are coming out now...
hope this helps.

Good riding if you know where to go. I live on the Southwest end of the island (Ewa) and commute daily to Pearl Harbor. I wouldn't recommend that route for an enjoyable ride, but you can ride from Kapiolani Park which is at the East end of Waikiki and head East towards Hawaii Kai and Waimanalo. Talk to Chris at the Bike Shop downtown on King Street and he will give you some guidance on area rides. No real bike lanes, but there are some low traffic roads and others with shoulders. As far as rentals, no clue other than hybrids and cruisers. PM me when you get closer to your trip and I will let you know where the group rides are meeting. Very laid back cycling here, lots of regroups.
BTW, if you bring your bike, leave your good tires at home. Lots of glass.

I like riding east from Waikiki, towards Daimond Head, Kahala, Hawaii Kai, Sandy Beach, and Makapuu.
Tantalus - hilly with a nice view of Honolulu
Manoa
Kaneohe and Kailua
Northshore - check out the surf while you ride, just make sure you lock your bike up if you take a break.
East coast from Laiea to Kahuku, eat some garlic prawns in Kahuku and pick up some watermelon if its in season.
Oahu has many great places to ride. Just respect the locals and wave a shakka and you'll be fine. Oh yeah, stay out of the housing areas in downtown, Kalihi, and Pauoa.
Have fun.

Thanks for the replies. I have Family near Diamond head (where I have shipped my bike) so that's probably where I will start exploring. Probably East bound, based on what you guys have said. I'll be arriving 11/17, but I'm guessing my bike won't show until early next week. Thanks the tips on where not to ride & the comment about the tires. I am bringing my beater wheelset & heavy tires, so as long as they arrive intact, I should be good to go. I'm certainly looking forward to riding in warm weather instead of the current ass cold conditions here in Utah.
