hi all,
i've been a lurker here for a while, recently got into road biking. i have to say, i love wearing my yellow jersey; it's not THE yellow jersey, but it's A yellow jersey. i know quite a few of u think the tour de france jerseys are off-limits.. and i see constant references to not wearing the "yellow jersey". does this apply to logo-less yellow? i like to ride like i'm armstrong.. (though of course i'm far from it)

i'm including a pic of me so y'all know what i mean.. don't i look spiffy? well, at least i THINK i do..lol.

Most of the people who get upset by this issue have problems with people wearing those types of jerseys during a race. It's the idea that the person wearing the jersey is trying to pass themselves off as if they actually won that jersey.

Your jersey is simply a yellow colored jersey... if we got all mad at that, then people couldn't wear a plain white jersey anymore either for fear it would be confused with the Tour's Best Young Rider jersey. What would be the next step... couldn't wear white undershirts to work? Maybe someone would think I was going to ride later and try to convince people I won that jersey in my younger days?

The big problem comes (in my mind at least) from someone who would try to race in an award jersey (World Champ Stripes, State Champion Jersey, National Champ Jersey, Tour Catagory Winner..... those types....) as if they actually won that jersey. Those jerseys are trophies in themselves... I would equate that to buying someone's bowling trophy at the flea market and putting it up on your mantle to show it off. It's not something criminal, but it is surely in poor taste.

But if anyone says anything to you about just wearing a plain yellow jersey, then it would be my opinion that they really don't understand the significance of the Malliot Jaune.

ahh nods.. thanks for the clearing-up. other reason i like the yellow jersey (and i also have shiny purple, red, and orange) is so cars see me.. yellow is, i read a while back, the easiest to spot ont he road, hence school buses are yellow..

I think you'll have more trouble with bees than other roadies. Wearing yellow gets me stung.

I have a yellow jersey that I was awarded for fundraising on a charity event. I wear it with pride (just not past July 1st, then it gets me stung).

I think bright colors like yellow and orange are great for getting cars to notice you. More visibility == longer life span.

Personally, I really don't care if someone is wearing a foreign pro team jersey or foreign race leader jersey or whatever. You might get some odd looks if you're wearing some local team jersey and you're not a member of the team, but I really don't care about that either. I think the more ways to get people interested in different aspects of cycling, the better.

If visibility is the issue, consider 'Hi-Viz' jerseys. FAR, FAR, FAR better than yellow.

I don't get on the road without Hi-Viz. Jerseys and Jackets all Hi-Viz.

The yellow jersey you are wearing is fine. Wear it!

Those long grey socks, however, have got to go. ;)

Looks more orange than yellow. Is it my monitor??

Even if it was the Credit Lyonnaise jersey, it would probably be OK as long as you:
a) kept up a decent pace and at least looked like a racer, and
b) never, ever, ever wore it to any kind of club race.

Last yyear, I often saw a paunchy middle age guy on a sqeaking hybid wearin a CL yellow jersey as he slowly mashed along the local MUT. Sad...

I used to think that it was in poor taste to "pimp" jerseys, but after seeing the USPS selling cycling jerseys in size 5XL, well, maybe a fit cyclist wanting to look like a pro isn't so bad in comparison...

I wear that off the bike on "casual Fridays" at the office.

Needless to say, no one gets it, but I like it that way.

Obviously the original poster's jersey is fine, you wouldn't get a complaint from anyone. I have read several threads about cyclists wearing yellow winners jerseys, and it doesn't bother me. I can't imagine anyone is ever going to believe they are passing a former TDF winner, around their local area. We had the Tour Down Under recently and a mate of mine rode in a Vet's support race. He won and was given a TDU winners jersey, he wears it to our Saturday races, mainly to stir the other guys and let them know he is fast. It's all done with a laugh. He probably wears it on training rides also, who cares, he earned it.

CHEERS.

I think the rule of thumb is simple. If you look like there's a chance in hell that someone could ever mistake you for a D1 rider then skip all the full euro garb, the winner's jerseys, etc. If not, wear 'em at your leisure. Everyone will realize you're just a fan and if anyone is insulted by someone playing "fan", then they've got serious social issuse they need to overcome. Around my neck of the woods, people sporting "visicolors" or full euro kits are almost always slow as hell. You would never mistake any of them for a pro of any sort let alone someone who even races locally. Once in a blue moon you'll see someone with this stuff on who can actually ride a lick but that is RARE. For a purely recreational cyclist, I say go for it.

I've got an eBay-bought CL yellow that I'm just waiting for the right moment for. I figure I'm going to spring it on my riding buddy at an upcoming charity ride. It's more to bust his 'nads than anything. And no, I wouldn't go anywhere near a race with it.

I must say, though, I can't understand the "fashion police" mentality. I'm a big Boston Bruins' fan, and when I wear my jersey out somewhere, I don't get mistaken for a Thornton wanna-be. It's just about being a fan. And yes, I've played hockey wearing it, too. Again, NO ONE is going to mistake me for Joe Thornton. Not at 5' 10" and 160 lbs.

I've only purchased one pro team jersey in my life, US Postal circa 1999. It's pretty ugly but now it's old skool so I wear it occasionally on solo rides. When I bought a Trek three years ago, the owner of my LBS threw in the jersey for $30. Plus, my dad worked for the USPS for 20 years, so it's something of a tribute to him. But I've received three other pro team jerseys as gifts over the years (7Up, Euskatel and Brioche-La Boulangere). I wear 'em to remind myself that I have cool friends who buy me jerseys and because they are top-shelf in design, fit and materials. I don't really care what other riders think when I'm out on the road.

In Europe all kinds of people wear pro jerseys. I was riding in France in February (snuck my bike over on a business trip) and saw two guys in FDJeux.com kit. Figured they were just locals. Then I heard the Aussie accent: it was Baden Cooke. He was too busy to care I was wearing Brioche.

But I agree that it's not Kosher to wear a "trophy" jersey of any kind of champion unless you've earned it.

Wear whatever you want to.

I have a Molteni World Champ jersey and never, ever has someone mistaken me for a certain Mr. Merckx, who by the way does his rides often these days in Lotto-Domo colours, so is he a poser or what?

You can buy bikes, socks, jerseys etc with world champ stripes on them ... are they not okay to wear?

I totally agree that in a race, wearing a jersey that 'should' be won is wrong, but if I happen to get a King Of The Mountains TDF Jersey, then I will wear it every time I ride hills ... as it will be a little bit of added motivation on the climbs ... I know that imagining I'm riding in the TdF helps pass some of the time on training rides.

I really like the World Champ Stripes, and will be adding them to the paint scheme on my fixie, I think they're a little detail that only cyclists will recognise. I don't think anyone will mistake me for a world champ anytime soon.

I wear yellow jersey's cuz they were cheap. Had them embroidered our neighborhood name and symbol for a few bucks. Every once in a while people ask me for one.

I personally wouldn't wear a true maillot jaune, out of respect, but I don't think to little of folks who do.

On the other hand, I don't think there is a problem wearing a pro team jersey. The way I explain it to my mom (who was more concerned about "paying to advertise for someone"), it is just like wearing a Cincinnati Reds jersey: I'm showing support for the team as a fan, rather than trying to "be" a pro.

On the third hand, my mom wanted to buy me a jersey for my birthday: either a CSC jersey, or a plain red one (I had narrowed it to the two). I opted for the red one, as CSC is a competitor of my employer--it just didn't seem right to me. Again, that was my choice.

I wear my "hunter's orange" in more red-neck-y parts of NorCal -- think Clear Lake, Middletown, etc. Had one guy yell from his truck, "I like yer shirt!"

I only have 3 jerseys, My recent was a new cannondale bought last week on a trip to tahoe. My other 2 are both from the ToC. I have the over all winner jersey, bought as memorabilia, never wear it. I also have the blue one, "most aggressive" and wear that one ride.

So for all of you who care what others wear, let's dive into the metacognition of me wearing that jersey...

1. It was the only one I had
2. I like the colors
3. It promotes the AMGEN Tour of California
4. Said AMGEN ToC was very instrumental in me getting bike on a bike. I watched 3 stages, took a day off of work (first time ever I called in sick)
5. I am not fast, only riding again since Feb
6. The design hides my lovehandles
7. I have lost close to 45 pounds now riding in that jersey. The 1st 5 pounds was just trying to get it on everyday.
8. Looks good with my only pair of bibs ( old assos CSC? team shorts from years ago, on sale a few omnths back for like 30 bucks, XXL size only, way better than my cheap bike shorts I had)
9. No one down Danville Blvd, Pete's Coffee or Mt Diablo would mistake me for someone who one the "Most Agressive" jersey in the ToC
10. I look good in it now, it is actually baggy in the belly.
11. All the mom's out on the MUT I see every morning on my way to the hills recognize me in it. (I got back my trip, wore my new jersey, none of my regular"good-morning" mom's said goodmorning or waved)
12. I don;t worry about what you, when you pass me, or I pass you, I just pedal and smile, except by the canals, too many bugs, don't taste good, can;t smile there.

Well, depending on where you ride they might be mistaken for rainbows and you could get a beer can chucked at your head.

They sell these damn jerseys in the bike stores, so SOMEONE has to buy/wear them!? :out:

Man, you're not kidding. I can't believe that this is something that bothers people. Obviously, the people bugged out by me wearing my QS-Innergetic jersey around town riding do not have the more important tasks of performing at high pressure jobs, raising families, and paying bills that I have.

I think I'm going to get a CL yellow jersey shirt ( $115 ) and discovery outfit ($180)..

And just realize these other people can't afford it since they have to playa hate. :2:

I think my main point is everyone decides for themselves. If you want to wear a CL jersey, more power to you.

It was my choice not to be seen wearing the logo of my competitor. Though the chances that I might be seen by my boss or higher while wearing it was slim, it is simply trouble I don't want. Anyone else work for a compeitor of a Pro team (Cingular, for instance)? How do you feel?

I rode the other day with someone in a CSC jersey; I was in a USPS one, and I was more amused by the situation than anything. There are those who would have a problem with it; I just see it as a fan thing.
