View Full Version : Mike Garcia Wheels? ThePorge 11-17-2005, 10:10 AM Can a few of you who own these wheels give me some feed back on how you like 'um and how they are holding up? Many Tks PsyDoc 11-17-2005, 12:11 PM You will find many people who have had great experiences with Mike's wheels and others who were not too satisfied. I have had 4 sets and an additional rear wheel built by him. The wheels have performed well and the build is solid. I did have two non-drive side spokes (14 DB) break within 6-weeks of receiving it. I called him up after the first one broke to let him know about it and he sent out a couple additional spokes, just in case. He said that if another breaks to send it back to him and he'd take a look. These wheels have since been retired to the "rain bike." Many will agree, as do I, that his customer service practices are outstanding...that, and he is affable to boot. The only aesthetic difference I have noticed in the wheels he builds versus "prebuilts" is that he puts a noticeable "kink" or "bend" in the spokes where they cross. I think it might be for better alignment to the nipple...others with wheelbuilding experience can comment on why. The only reason I mention the "kink" is that is the spot where both spokes broke; about 1 inch above the hub flange on a DA 7700 hub. Many Tks My spoke came loose @ about 200 miles. I tried to true it back to shape and was not happy with my work and since i paid $350 for the set I sent back one wheel which was repaired and i am happy ever after. I would not hesitate to buy again from Mike. Very satisfied with the overall quality of the wheels, compliment my bike perfectly. Not wild wiz bang look at me wheels, clever designed Speedcific hubs with the DT Swiss rims. piano, piano 11-18-2005, 12:40 PM I purchased a pair of Mike Garcia's Speedcific/DT Swiss wheels this summer, and after putting 850 kilometers (approx. 528 miles) on them, I am very satisfied. They roll quite nicely, and they are as true as the day that I unpacked them. I would definitely purchase from Mike again, and have my eye on a pair of Speedcific/Nobiums for my new bike. the mayor 11-18-2005, 01:47 PM I have Zipp 404's, Mavic Ksyriums SSC Sl's and Velomaxes( and a few other high priced wheels that I hate)....but I got a set of Mike's speedcific/Niobium wheels and they have become my favorite wheels. Fast ,strong, light and cheap! I think some of my other wheels will be hitting Ebay this winter.... CNY rider 11-18-2005, 04:32 PM I don't want to drool all over the guy, but a set he built for me is my absolute favorite as well. I'm a lightweight climber. We went with a front Speedcific hub laced to a Nimble Spider rim. Rear has a DT 240s hub and Velocity Aerohead rim. If you tell mike about yourself and your riding style he will make you an excellent set of wheels. I've had K's and I think Mike's wheels are far superior. fmw 11-19-2005, 04:33 AM After riding on reduced spoke count wheels, I took my first test ride on my new Speedcific wheels yesterday. It was as though I had put little shock absorbers on the bike. Really nice ride. Yes, they are stiff but more comfortable to ride on the rough country roads I ride, particularly with my harsh riding aluminum bike. My set is 28 bladed spokes front and rear on DT Swiss rims. Great wheels. Here's an image of mine: http://www.foodieforums.com/otherimages/moto.jpg |
