I've been tossing around the idea of tufo's tubular/clincher, I gues a tire that has a bead to hold it to a clincher rim. I'd like the convienence of clinchers but everybody I see racing is using tubulars. any advice?

They work pretty well, you have to remove the rim strip and they can be challenging to mount, but do able. They are not so hot to train on, you have little recourse if you flat. Some people report problems running low pressures, they have seemd pretty good to me, I only use mine occasionally. I don't see any reason not to use them for a race wheelset, they are a little heavy, but so what.

I have not had to remove the rim strip to mount mine. I've also mounted mine to a 19mm width rim which is smaller than recommended. I have to "encourage" the tire a little bit with a plastic tire iron to get it to seat around the valve stem. But I've never had a problem rolling them and I've taken them off and put them on perhaps 5-6 times.
I've done perhaps 8 races on them and like them just fone. However, last year I bought a set of real tubies so I only use the tubular clinchers sometimes on the pit bike.
All-in-all, not a bad system. However, you can pick up tubular wheelsets on Ebay pretty cheaply and get the benefits of lower weight and a more supple ride. And glueing isn't that hard.
